  • Karakalpakstan is an autonomous republic in Uzbekistan. The carakalpaks come from Kazakhstan and were expelled there. Together with the Khiva Khanate, the region became part of Russia in 1873 and part of the Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan in 1936. Since December 14, 1991, the republic has been autonomous within Uzbekistan. The republic has its own constitution and parliament. Karakalpakstan does not have its own currency.
