The small town of Narita is city of Chiba prefecture, To 70 km to the east of Tokyo, in the region of Kantō, on Honshū the largest island in Japan.

The vast majority of visitors to Narita come here for one reason:Narita International Airport, the most important international gateway to Tokyo. There are still a few attractions in the vicinity if you have a short stopover and don't want to spoil 2-h round trip to travel to Tokyo.

First of all, the town of Narita itself is very charming with heaps of quaint winding old streets lined with old wooden shops. The pace of life here is extremely different from the neighboring capital and is very relaxing. Naritasan is one of the most visited temples in Japan. These important annual festivals, with parades and traditional performances, give you a glimpse into historic Japan. The city is also an important gathering point for airline personnel, and therefore you can expect most of the city's foreigners to be crew members. This means that there is a bit more nightlife in Narita than you might expect for this peaceful town.

By plane

The main airport for Narita is, of course, theNarita International Airport. The easiest way to get to Narita town from the airport is to take the service from the Keisei line (10 min, 250 JPY, all the 20 min). Local buses are available from the train station. Do not take the train services named “Access route” as they do not go to Narita town.

A direct taxi ride from the airport to Narita town costs approximately 3 500 JPY ; it will be cheaper to go to town by train and then take a taxi from there.

Local buses also run from the airport to some of the city's main attractions.

The easiest way to get from Tokyo to Narita city is with the Keisei line private. Commuter trains depart from Keisei Ueno and Nippori stations every 20 min approximately most of the day, arriving at Keisei Narita station in approximately h (810 JPY). Please note, trains named "Sky Access" or "Access Route" are direct and do not allow you to go to Narita town.

A train with reserved seats, the City Liner, makes a daily round trip between Ueno and Keisei Narita. The trains Morning Liner and Evening liner operate during peak hours in the morning and evening respectively. All these trains on reservation request to pay a respective supplement of 920 JPY and 400 JPY. Tickets for Morning Liner and Evening liner can only be purchased the same day at certain specific vending machines.

If you are traveling from Tokyo from to Narita town via the JR line, the commuter train "Narita Airport »Allows each hour to go from Tokyo Station to JR Narita Station with the Sōbu line in h 15 (1 110 JPY). An alternative route is to take the fast service Jōban line from Ueno via Abiko. These two possibilities are free with the Japan Rail Pass.

Narita is also served by trains Narita express which operate during rush hour between Narita Airport and Tokyo; 4 services stop at Narita in the morning towards Tokyo, and 4 others from Tokyo stop there in the evening. If you want to travel from Narita to Tokyo in the morning, the Narita Express is a convenient choice (and free with the Japan Rail Pass; a reservation is still required). Some of these trains stop at Shinagawa, a convenient place to join the Shinkansen for Nagoya, Kyoto and further west, as the others go to Shinjuku and Yokohama. the Ayame, only in peak hours' also runs between Tokyo Station and Narita on the JR line, without a seat by reservation.

Narita has a large number of hotels nearby, often cheaper than those in central Tokyo. So it might be worth it to stay towards the airport for your first / last night.
