Known as the second center of the metropolis (副 都 心, fukutoshin). The area surrounding Shinjuku Station is a huge shopping and entertainment center located on top of the busiest train station complex in the world.

How to orient yourself

To the north it is located 1 Takadanobaba (高田 馬 場), where students from the neighbor meet Waseda University. The residential areas of 2 Yotsuya is 3 Ichigaya, with their many small restaurants and drinking establishments, lie to the east. Kagurazaka, one of the last hanamachi (geisha neighborhoods) remaining in Tokyo, it is also home to some of the most authentic French and Italian restaurants in the city. Over 300,000 people - including nearly 30,000 foreign residents - call Shinjuku their home and city offers a wide variety of options for work or play.

The west side of Shinjuku is a seismically stable area that has escaped the latest wave of earthquakes, it is the skyscraper district that houses (among others) the giant Tokyo Metropolitan Government offices and the curved shape and webbed facade of the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower.

The east side of Shinjuku is dedicated to shopping and nightlife, including Tokyo's largest red light district 4 Kabukichō (歌舞 伎 町) northeast of JR Shinjuku Station, is Tokyo's most famous red light district, although you may not notice it during the day, especially if you can't crack the elaborate Japanese codes on billboards. At night it's a different story though, as the best-suited young yakuza gangsters and miniskirt girls invite customers between the adult-only vending machines. At night or during the day, it is always full of people, and until recently some violence nearby (although strangers are generally not generally involved).

5 Golden Gai (ゴ ー ル デ ン 街) is the name given to a few narrow alleys in a block on the eastern side of Kabukichō. It is chock full of tiny "wall" bars and started out as a red light district a few decades ago; becoming a kind of subversive meeting place; and finally now in a strange assortment of tiny bars (some on very steep steps). The irony of the place is that while it has somewhat become a tourist attraction, many of the bars rely on regulars, so wandering strangers can receive a frosty welcome. If the door is open and you let in a smile, it's an experience you can't have anywhere else. Many bars have karaoke and antique bars mama-sans, while one has an old man who speaks Spanish and plays flamenco videos on a tiny black and white TV, and who occasionally plays guitar; another has a large collection of jazz music. Some places charge extra for coin karaoke or a supplement added to the bill while others like Bar K, they give it available free of charge.

6 Shinjuku ni-chōme (新宿 2 丁目) is the gay district.

In the vicinity of 7 Ōkubo (大 久保), a stop west of Shinjuku on the Chuo Line (also Shin-Ōkubo, on Yamanote), has many other Asian restaurants and grocery stores - Korean, Chinese, Thai, Arabic and more.

How to get

From the airport

The fastest way to reach Shinjuku fromairport of Narita is to take the train Keisei Skyliner and change to Nippori on the line JR Yamanote (which can get very busy at peak times, making it inconvenient to carry luggage). This transfer takes approximately 65 minutes with transfer and costs ¥ 2590. JR Narita Express offers a one-way ride to Shinjuku, but takes longer (85 minutes) and costs more (¥ 3110), although for foreigners the cost can be reduced to ¥ 2000 per way by purchasing a N'EX Tokyo Round - Trip Ticket.

Low-cost travelers can use the regular commuter train Keisei line for Nippori and go to the line Yamanote (about 105 minutes, ¥ 1190). In the evening, the fastest trains Access Tokkyu Narita Airport to Nippori takes 20 minutes out of total travel time against a ¥ 200 surcharge. JR Yokosuka-Sōbu it also has stations in both Narita terminals.

The limousine bus frequently pass Narita Airport to Shinjuku Station West Exit and area hotels (approximately 2 hours, ¥ 3000).

There are also terminal stations for private railway lines Keio, Odakyu is Seibu Shinjuku.
The Guinness World Records recognizes Shinjuku station as the busiest train station in the world - over 3.8 million passengers pass by every day. If in doubt, try to board the line Marunouchi to Tokyo station at 8:00 on Monday morning. The station is a sight in itself, effectively forming a giant multi-level maze of department stores, restaurants, commercial buildings, railway structures and underground shopping malls that stretch for miles below the surrounding area. Getting lost in the station is normal for visitors for this reason it is advisable to "study" the station maps often hung for travelers or to pay attention to the indications written in English. The station is cut in two by an elevated road so exiting to the east or west to reach the south or north you get the feeling of being elsewhere, in reality you need to cross the road via an external underpass and find yourself in the north or south complex. The bus terminal is located in the southern part of the station on the third floor. In any case, there is an information office dedicated to the station.
As with all Japanese stations, there are many services for travelers including luggage storage through automatic lockers that can also be used with Pasmo and Suica cards with prices from ¥ 400 per day (May 2019). Stazione di Shinjuku su Wikipedia stazione di Shinjuku (Q801447) su Wikidata

Hidden in this tiny cube of a space is one of the coolest bars in Tokyo. A country western theme with Chet Baker and Nat King Cole pouring from the stereo. The food is cheap and superbly done (think chili nachos and the like); beer and spirits are also available. The place is tiny but attracts a great mix of young groups of friends and employees. Be warned though: some nights Marone puts on live music and cover charges are up by ¥ 4000! The older couple who run the bar are terribly friendly, but their English is minimal.
  • 30 Vagabond, 1-4-20 Nishi Shinjuku (In the west of Shinjuku, in the 2nd alley behind (north of) Odakyu Halc, Shinjuku), 81 3-3348-9109. A great little pub with two floors. Beware of taller travelers - it's a bit cramped at the bar. The cover charge and drinks are around ¥ 500-700. The pub usually closes around 11pm to 11.30pm, leaving you plenty of time to catch the last train.

Where to eat

A great way to survive in Tokyo on a low budget is to prepare lunch for the main meal. Many restaurants cater to the business lunch clientele and offer an excellent two- or three-course meal between ¥ 800-1300. Going to the same places for dinner would be up to three times more expensive.

An original Shinjuku venue that has since spawned several branches in other parts of Tokyo.
