background

View of Nea Moudania

Nea Moudania is not a typical tourist place, it is a small town where the inhabitants of Halkidiki can get the most important things in life. Due to the small port, it has gained quite good economic importance.

The name Nea (New) Moudania shows that the city was only founded in 1922 by members of the Greek minority in northern Turkey, who were expelled during the Greco-Turkish war. So the structure is not ancient, yet, as is usual in Greece, it is built very tightly, and the city has also grown quite quickly.

The port and the area around the city center is very interesting. The Greeks think a little differently than the Germans. It is better to come here later, then something is going on. Then it gets exciting. Now you can capture Greek life here.

So you can shop among Greeks, which, by the way, is very pleasant. The shops have their very own flair and often offer things that you cannot buy in Germany.

There is a market on Wednesday. However, this does not take place near the port, but a little further in the city. In addition to the usual stalls selling fake things from branded companies, you will also find the traditional market stalls that supply the Greeks with food and everything they need. The market is divided into two halves. Half with shoes, clothing etc. (with brand seals or not), the other half with fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, dried legumes, spices, olive oil, ouzo, wine and everything the Greek heart desires. The part with the fabrics is quite interesting, there are also many dealers here who not only sell lousy T-shirts with a logo.

But you are not pressured in this market as you know it from other markets. You sit behind your display and only when a visitor shows interest does the lady or gentleman behind the stand get up and ask. But you don't get any real advice.
