background

location

The city is located in the arrondissement of Colmar and is the administrative seat of the canton of Neuf-Brisach. It is almost completely surrounded by the municipality of Volgelsheim.

history

The city was built between 1699 and 1703 as a fortress city because the fortified city of Breisach on the other side of the Rhine had to be returned to Austria with the Rijswijk Peace Treaty in 1697. As a result, France had to build a new border fortification. For this reason, Louis XIV commissioned his fortress architect Vauban to build what was then the largest baroque fortress town at the time, which is now considered Vauban's masterpiece. As a planned city, the city has an octagonal shape, in which the former parade ground is centrally located, which is now used as a marketplace. The road network was laid out like a chessboard. The city is surrounded by an impressive rampart made of Vosges granite, for the delivery of which a 40-kilometer-long canal (Canal Vauban) was built. First, care was taken to ensure that the city complied with military requirements. The church and town hall were initially built as temporary arrangements. The church was not built until 1736 and the town hall was not built until 1758. The only proof that the city had been properly laid out was in 1743, when it resisted an attack by the Austrians. During the Franco-Prussian War, the fortifications were already out of date, and the city was heavily destroyed by the Germans after a siege. Although it was rebuilt, it remained militarily insignificant in the following period. Only the garrison existed until 1992. After its dissolution, the city became an almost pure residential community for commuters to Colmar and the Breisgau. The expansion of the residential and usable areas is very limited by the existing fortifications, so that the population development takes place in the surrounding communities of Biesheim and Volgelsheim.

A blue marked path leads you in the footsteps of Vauban. A nice walk into the heart of the story! "
