Newark-on-Trent - city and civil parish w Englandin the region East Midlands, in the county Nottinghamshire, in the Newark and Sherwood District, located on the River Trent. Famous for the fact that King Charles I surrendered during the English Civil War.

Newark Castle

Newark has probably been a transportation hub since Roman times - here the "Fosse Way" reaches the navigable River Trent. The city thrived on wool and textiles, and in the early 11th century it was owned by Lady Godiva, the legendary naked rider. King John died here in 1216, a year after the Magna Carta was signed. When the English Civil War broke out in 1642 over monarchy versus parliament, Newark backed the Royalists. But by 1646 Charles I was defeated throughout England and surrendered (in nearby Southwell, actually); in 1649 it was beheaded. His son Charles II continued the war until 1651, but then fled into exile and Britain became a republic. The castles that resisted parliament were demolished, so Newark Castle fell into disrepair.

Tourist information

Where next

Newark is 11 miles (19 km) from Sherwood Forest, the house of Robin Hood, the legendary (okay let's be honest, fictional) outlaw. The fact is that it is the last stand of primeval forest in England. Everything else is planting later, so the ecosystem is unique, with skinny old oaks.

A must see Lincoln with the cathedral and the castle surrounding the picturesque historic center. If you want to spend a day at the seaside, the most accessible is Cleethorpes. The main cities within an hour by train are Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds and York.
