The island was a convict colony from 1788 to 1813 and again from 1825 to 1855, with the cruel treatment of prisoners particularly common during the second phase. As on the Lord Howe Island From 1856 descendants of the Bounty mutineers settled out Pitcairn here at.

Enjoy natural beauties especially in the national park. Ornithologists can find rare species everywhere. The highest point on the island is the 4 Mont Bates Height = 319 m.
