Nõmme is a district of the city of Tallinn.
To know
Nõmme is the southernmost district of Tallinn. Until the end of the 19th century it was a rural area dominated by woods and typical moorland landscapes (Nõmme means moorland). Its urbanization is due to Baron Nikolai von Glehn (1841 - 1923), a wealthy landowner and extraordinary architect who in 1870 began the creation of a railway station and a model village with dacha-type dwellings in the wooded area south of Tallinn. In 1886 the eccentric baron had a neo-Gothic style castle built in the center of his estate with the intention of making it his residence. In the following decades, he devoted himself with dedication to his goal of making Nõmme a city with fairytale touches, completely different from its neighbor. Tallinn. However, he was unable to fulfill his dream: In 1918 he decided to leave for the Brazil to accompany the sick son to whom the doctors had prescribed a stay in a country with a warm climate.
In 1926 Nõmme obtained the status of municipality and in 1940 became an integral part of Tallinn. After the departure of the baron, condominiums were built very different from the cottages he carefully designed but still today Nõmme has the prevailing aspect of a garden city. It is a district immersed in the woods and with a low population density, characteristics that make it a highly placed neighborhood.
There are no hotels in Nõmme and cottages do not appear in accommodation search portals such as Airbnb. The only tourists you see around are cyclists in the mood for hiking.
