Oven pass - Ofenpass

The Furnace pass (roman .: Pass dal Fuorn) leads from Zernez in the Upper Engadine to Tschierv in the Val Müstair (Munster Valley).

background

The Ofenpass is a north-south connection from the Lower Engadine to the Münstertal, where it connects to the ancient route Via Claudia Augusta. This Roman road was a cross-alpine connection between Bavaria - Tyrol and Northern Italy via the Reschenpass already meaning in ancient times. In the caves Cuvels da l'Ova Spin, which today lie on the lakeshore line below the hamlet of Ova Spin, bones and flint fragments were found, which indicate that these caves had served as a resting place in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. In Roman times a mule track led over the pass.

The importance of the transition from northern Italy (via the Julier Pass) to Chur led to the foundation of the monastery around 800 Mustair. A regulation of the pass traffic has been preserved from 1544, grain, wine, iron, copper and salt were transported over the pass, but from the 16th to the 19th century. compared to Julier, Septimer and Splügen Pass was only of secondary importance in north-south traffic across the Alps.

The furnace pass got its name from the mining industry, from 1332 tunnels were created at Munt Buffalora and iron ore was mined. The (blast) ovens (Fuorns) built at that time gave the oven pass its name. At the end of the 15th century, iron ore was also mined at Murteras da Grimmels and smelted on site, and over the centuries the rich forests were cut down for this purpose. When the sparse iron deposits were exhausted, the wood was used as a raw material and iron ore was used for smelting Bormio brought up; the ruins of a blast furnace from 1684 have been preserved.

From 1846 there was stagecoach traffic on the repaired road Munster Valley possible, but only in 1870/72 did the federal government build the pass road due to its military and strategic importance Zernez to the national border. Postbus courses started running from 1922, and from 1934 they were run all year round.

In 1906 plans were made for a narrow-gauge railway line from Zernez Developed with connection to the Vinschgau Railway, despite the concession granted by the federal government in 1909, the project was never implemented due to financial problems in view of the looming First World War. The dam of the reservoir 1 Lai dad Ova Spin was built in 1965/68. The reservoir is connected to the Livigno reservoir, and when electricity demand is low, water can be pumped into the 150 m higher areas Lake Livigno can be pumped up, if necessary, the energy can be converted back into electricity.
