How to get around

On the train

The Val Venosta railway line, owned by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, colleague Merano (302 m a.s.l.) a Malles Venosta (997 m a.s.l.) crossing almost all of its territory for about 60 kilometers.

By bike

In the nineties, a network of cycle paths in Alto Adige (in German Radwege) was launched that connect all the main valleys to each other and to neighboring regions, including those of other states (theAustria and the Switzerland).

All the main access roads in South Tyrol are connected with cycle paths, equipped with special bilingual signs. So from the capital Bolzano you reach the borders of South Tyrol, that is: Resia, Brenner, San Candido, val Monastero is Salorno. However, the cycle paths do not end in these border areas, but rather continue in the following provinces or states. In addition to these main paths, there are also other less important ones from a road point of view, but perhaps even more fascinating. For example, there are cycle paths, or are under construction, along the Val di Vizze, along the Val di Landro (cycle path of the Dolomites), along the Sesto valley, along the Val Gardena, along the Val di Sarentino, along the Val Passiria , along the Valle Aurina, along the Anterselva valley, along the Casies valley, and many others.

The cycle path that starts from the Brenner and initially descends along the Isarco valley, until Bolzano, and continues following the Corsa dell'Adige until it joins the cycle path of the Adige Valley is part of the project of cyclopista del Sole, cyclopath that reaches up to Sicily is Sardinia.

Another important cycle path is that of Val Venosta, which starts from the Resia pass and first descends to Merano and finally to Bolzano following the course of the Adige.

The main tracks

The bell tower that rises from the lake makes it unique and unmistakable. 6 km long, with a capacity of 120 million cubic meters, it is also the largest lake in theSouth Tyrol.

Itineraries

What to do

At the table

Local products are:

  • Pear Pala - It is a pear that comes from ancient fruit trees that have survived in Val Venosta. Sweet and beneficial product, once its consumption was recommended by doctors and pharmacists. This fairly rare production pear is used for dishes, such as Weihnachtszelten with Palabirnschnitz, a type of Christmas panforte with pear, or for the pear shovel bread, which in season is also found in local bakeries.
With the pear Pala Glurns dedicates the Days of the Pear Pala in September, with sale and tasting of specialties based on this fruit, which is also used for the preparation of spirits.
  • Paarlbrot - The Venostan loaf -Vinschger Paarl - or the crusty bread - Schüttelbrot - are made with South Tyrolean wheat; the origins of these types of bread lie in the ovens of medieval monasteries. It is preferably consumed with mountain cheeses.
  • Alpine cheese - You can buy it directly in the malghe, where there are usually ten to twelve cows; the production in the malga dates back to the Middle Ages. The cheese is in the soft or seasoned types; yoghurt and butter are also produced.
Each form of cheese bears the indication of the production hut.

Drinks

  • Wine - Around theAbbey of Monte Maria the highest vineyard in Europe extends to 1,340 meters above sea level. The southern exposure, the cool nights and the hot days lead to ripening grapes with high sugar content, a lively acidity and a particularly fruity aroma that allow to obtain excellent wine.
Also to Sluderno white and red grapes of the Müller Thurgau and Zweigelt vines are made in the “Engelsberg” estate.
  • Whiskey - The first and only whiskey distillery in Italy is the PUNI di Glurns.
  • Distillates based on pear Shovel.
