What see

Castel Montechiaro seen from below
  • 1 Montechiaro Castle (Lichtenberg). It most likely dates back to the early 13th century and is documented since 1228. It was built by the counts of Tyrol to counter the bishops of Chur, present on the opposite side of the valley.
The surrounding wall probably belongs to the original phase. The documents also mention the two towers: the south one and the Ilprando tower (in German Hiltprandsturm).
During the fourteenth century the structure was enlarged with a large palace and a secondary building (called "small palace") in Gothic style, rich in frescoes with chivalrous themes, now preserved at the Tiroler Landesmusuem Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck.
Following some battles that took place in its vicinity, such as the battle of Calven (1499), it was decided to strengthen its defensive structures by raising a new wall with battlements, and a new tower, the circular tower. At that time the castle was in the fief of the lords of Spaur, of which it is preserved a Prague the oldest register of property owners of the castle, dating back to the years 1477-1483.
The Khuen-Belasi family took possession of the castle in 1513 and during the 16th century, with the help of Archbishop Johann Jakob Khuen-Belasi, they carried out various structural works: a floor was added to the large palace and a scalar tower was built. In addition, the archbishop had a chapel built.
Between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century it underwent a slow decay, to the point that in 1908 it was decided to transport some frescoes to the Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck. In 1925 the privately owned castle was described in a precarious condition. A restoration and consolidation project was drawn up in 1950, but was later abandoned after simply clearing it of the rubble.
In 1961, due to the danger of a sliding downstream of the walls, the mayor of Prato allo Stelvio requested the execution of urgent works and between 1962 and 1965 the urgent consolidation works for the surrounding walls began. Other restorations were carried out between 1982 and 1984 by a local association and the local superintendency.
  • Church of San Giovanni. Inside, Romanesque and Gothic frescoes from the late 13th century are still visible.
