What see

The submerged bell tower
  • 1 Submerged bell tower. Curon's old bell tower - and the church attached to it - dates back to 1357. In winter, when Lake Resia freezes, the bell tower is within walking distance. A legend tells that on some winter days the bells can still be heard (which were removed from the bell tower on July 18, 1950, before the lake was formed).
In 2009, the last (in 2016) restoration of the structure was carried out: in May the water level of the lake was slightly lowered with false barriers in order to allow interventions on the submerged areas, subject to water infiltration and winter frosts that had caused cracks and instability. The roof was also restored, for the first time since 1899 (as shown by the date imprinted on the tiles).
The lake seen from the north
  • 2 Resia Lake (Reschensee). At the Resia pass there were three natural lakes: Lake Resia, Lake Curon also known as Lake Mezzo (German Grauner See or Mittersee) and Lake San Valentino alla Muta. The construction of a large dam in 1950 unified the first two previous lakes and submerged the ancient town of Curon Venosta which was rebuilt further upstream. 163 houses and 523 hectares of fruit-growing land were submerged. The basin of the current lake was obtained from it, 6 km long and 1 km wide at the point of maximum width.
The works began in '39, but for the beginning of the war they were first slowed down and then suspended in '43. In 1946, despite the post-war economic difficulties and the lack of all the raw materials necessary for the continuation of the work, the works were resumed thanks to Swiss investments and completed with the inauguration on 28 August 1949.
At the beginning of 2014, the EURAC researchers of Bolzano conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the potential of "floating photovoltaic islands" on the lake. According to the study, the surface of a high mountain lake could be exploited to produce energy
The border between Italy and Austria that runs beyond the pass
  • 3 Resia Pass (Reschenpass). The Resia pass is an alpine pass located not far from the Austrian border west of the Brenner, near the Switzerland and the triple border point. It connects the Tyrol and theSouth Tyrol.
In reality, geographically, the pass is in full Italian territory, while the border is located just beyond this and therefore at a slightly lower altitude. From the orographic point of view, the Pass divides the western Rhaetian Alps from the eastern Rhaetian Alps.
In pre-Roman times, a path already connected the Inn valley with the high Val Venosta. The current Passo di Resia was incorporated into the Via Claudia Augusta, inaugurated in 50 AD. In the Middle Ages and again at the beginning of the Modern Age, the pass competed with the passes of the gods Grisons. Until 1854 on the fortified bridges of the Inn in Finstermünz, north of Nauders, there were customs posts between theAustria and the Switzerland.
In the years 1850-54 Carl Ritter von Ghega (former builder of the Semmering railway, from Lower Austria to Styria, between Vienna is Graz) and Joseph Duile built the new road from Fort Nauders to Kajetansbrücke. The plans for a road in the Reschen could not be completed.
At the beginning of the twentieth century it was also planned to continue the Merano-Malles railway up to the pass, and then descend to Landeck, in Austria. The works for the Resia railway began during the First World War, but with the end of the conflict, they were suspended. Some partially incomplete works of art are still visible today.
During the late 1930s, two barrages were built at the pass: the Passo Resia barrage and the Pian dei Morti barrage. These, formed by several bunkers, were to prevent a possible invasion of the Nazi army in Italy. After the war, some of these structures were re-deployed in NATO during the Cold War.

  • Dam Resia Pass.
