San Candido (Innichen in German) is a city of Trentino Alto Adige.
To know
San Candido is a renowned winter and summer tourist resort of the Dolomites, in Val Pusteria, included in the Tre Cime natural park. The municipality of San Candido is made up of the villages of San Candido, Monte di San Candido, Versciago and Prato Drava.
With over 400,000 overnight stays a year, San Candido is one of the most important tourist communities in theSouth Tyrol.
Background
The oldest traces of settlements date back to the Celts and the 4th century. In the period 769-1803 San Candido belonged to the "Hochstift Freising" and then arrived in the Tyrol region until 1919. Then San Candido was in Italy with all of Alto Adige.

By plane
The nearest airports are those of Bolzano and those of Innsbruck, each about an hour's drive. Other airports are at Verona is Munich (about 3 - 3.5 hours by car).
By car
- Autostrada del Brennero A22 (toll): until the exit for Bressanone / Vahrn (Val Pusteria), then on the Pustertalsstraße (state road SS49-E66) in Alta Pusteria (distance from the Bressanone / Val Pusteria motorway exit about 60 km).
- Via Felbertauern e Lienz in East Tyrol, on the state road (B100-E66) in Alta Pusteria and San Candido.
On the train
The San Candido railway station is located on the Val Pusteria railway (San Candido - Franzensfeste) and on the "Drautalbahn Franzensfeste" - Brunico - San Candido - Lienz (Austria / East Tyrol).
The San Candido train station is also located on the main axis Innsbruck - Lienz - Vienna. The Franzensfeste railway station is connected to the Brenner line (Munich - Innsbruck - Brenner - Bolzano) with IC connections.
Lienz station is the terminus of the "Drautalbahn" and the most important station in East Tyrol.
By bus
There are daily bus connections between San Candido and Trieste.

What see
- 1 Collegiate (Dom von Innichen). It is one of the most important Romanesque religious buildings in all the Eastern Alps. The Benedictine monastery of San Candido was built in 769 under the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III, making it the oldest abbey in Tyrol. The church was built as a three-nave basilica in the 13th century with the participation of Lombard builders. The creation of the dome and the vault date back to around 1200, the church was consecrated in 1284. The tower was completed in 1326 and the portico around 1415. The organ dates back to the 17th century. Of particular interest are the domed late Romanesque frescoes (around 1285, on the theme of the history of creation), the Romanesque crypt and a Gothic fresco, as well as the crucifixion group in the choir.
- 2 Museum of the Abbey of San Candido, Attostrasse 3. The archives and library of the Abbey of San Candido are housed in the museum, as are the treasures of the cathedral, sacred art, collections of manuscripts and works of art by local artists.
- 3 Parish Church of San Michele. Built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. The vaults were built around 1400. From 1735 to 1760 the building became in the Baroque style.
- 4 Franciscan Church of San Leopoldo. Built from 1693 to 1697, interior in Tyrolean Baroque style.
- 5 Dolomythos. Created in 1995 as a private museum of archaeologist and nature lover Michael Wachtler. Here you can find artifacts on the history of Dolomites, its mountains and its inhabitants from prehistoric times to the present day. Museum shop.
- 6 city Hall. Built around 1300, rebuilt around 1500, until 1804 the official residence of the officers of the Bishop of Freising.
- Hunting castle.
