Sixth (Sexten in German) is a center of the Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

Sesto is located beyond the Alpine watershed; the Rio Sesto after crossing the Val di Sesto it flows into the Drava, a tributary of the Danube that flows into the Black Sea. It is the easternmost municipality in the region Trentino Alto Adige. Its population is almost all native German speakers (95.37%); 4.36% Italian; Ladin 0.07%.

Background

During the First World War the town of Sesto found itself in the middle of the conflict. The Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies faced each other for the domination of the main peaks, such as the Croda Rossa di Sesto, Mount Covolo, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Mount Paterno. When the war broke out to defend the town of Sesto there was only a company of reservists.During the conflict there were many people who distinguished themselves, such as the mountain guide Sepp Innerkofler, who together with his flying patrol complicated things for the Italian troops . The town was evacuated by the civilian population and is the only German-speaking town on the Italian border that had this fate.

At the end of the conflict the country was the one that suffered the most damage in South TyrolIn addition to the almost completely destroyed town, 54 people died, 4% of the town's population.Only in November 1918 the Italians managed to enter the town of Sesto, descending from the Monte Croce di Comelico pass. When the South Tyrolean question arose in September 1919 and again in October 1920, Sesto, despite being on the other side of the watershed, was annexed to Italy.

Sesto too, like many municipalities in theSouth Tyrol located towards the border, it was the subject of fortifications during the period of fascism. At the Monte Croce di Comelico pass there are many bunkers, which are part of the Vallo Alpino in South Tyrol, especially at the Creston Popera. These works go to form the Monte Croce Comelico pass barrier.

How to orient yourself

There Val di Sesto (Sextental in German) is a small valley that connects the val Pusteria to the Cadore, through the Passo di Monte Croce di Comelico. From the orographic point of view, the Val di Sesto separates the Dolomites (to the south-west) from the Carnic Alps (to the north-east). rural settlements and those at the bottom of the valley. The two villages that arise there, Sesto and Moso have grown extending to the edge of the main road and forming a continuum in which the small hamlets are now indistinguishable: Ferrara, San Vito, Waldheim.

Behind them are green meadows, farms and barns. Beyond the Sesto stream, towards the south, the houses give way to larch groves and pastures that extend as far as the Dolomite spurs. The crown of peaks of the Val Fiscalina and the northern forepart of the Tre Scarperi group impose themselves, drawing a long panorama of ridges, walls and pinnacles. So much so that the inhabitants of the valley gave the mountains progressive numerical toponyms: Cima Nove, Cima Dieci (better known as Croda Rossa di Sesto), Cima Undici, Cima Dodici (better known as Croda dei Toni) and Cima Una. These buds go to create the Sesto sundial, a gigantic natural clock; by following the position of the sun on the peaks of the Sesto Dolomites it is possible to know the exact time.

Neighborhoods

Its municipal territory also includes the villages of Ferrara (Schmieden), Monte di Mezzo (Mitterberg), Moso (Moos), Quiniga (Kiniger), San Giuseppe (Außerbaurschaft) and San Vito (St. Veit).

How to get around

What see

  • 1 Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul. It was built at the end of the 13th century, but no trace remains of this building. Rebuilt several times, it appears today in the 1824 version. With a moderately neo-baroque taste on the outside, the church offers two altarpieces by the Venetian Cosroe Drusi inside. The frescoes are by Albert Stolz.
  • Cemetery. The cemetery surrounding the parish church houses the graves of famous local climbers such as Sepp Innerkofler, and is filled with wrought iron crosses, wooden statues and frescoes of the Stolz family.
By Rudolf Stolz is the evocative Danza Macabra which adorns the walls of the round chapel that is the entrance to the cemetery, and which depicts the death arm in arm of different characters.
  • Church of San Giuseppe (in Moso). It is the church of the Moso hamlet and is located in the center of the small town. It was erected in 1717.
  • Chapel of the forest. After the outbreak of the First World War, the village church was severely damaged, and therefore the population decided to build a small chapel in the woods just above the town.
From the first Sunday of August 1917 and until spring, the parish priest Schwainghofer celebrated Holy Mass every Sunday and on feast days in this church.
  • Baths of Moso (Bad Moos). They arise in the hamlet of the same name, at the gates of the Val Fiscalina. They have mineral springs containing magnesium sulfate, calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate. Known since the 1500s, they were mentioned for the first time in 1650 by Count Brandis in his work on Tyrol. The Bagni di Moso underwent successive constructions until the construction of a thermal establishment in the early decades of the nineteenth century, which had 45 beds. Subsequently modernized several times, the Bagni di Moso are now part of the homonymous Sport-Kur-Spa, which offers a wide range of hydrotherapy treatments.
A bunker at the Monte Croce pass
  • Fort Mitterberg. Two forts were built near the town on the sides of the Val di Sesto: Fort Mitterberg on the north side and Fort Heideck on the south side, connected to each other and also with other fortifications of the Austro-Hungarian Empire defense line, through a optical telegraph and a telephone.
The forts had the function of preventing the descent of the Italian troops, in the event that the defenses of the Monte Croce di Comelico pass had given way, in order to defend Sesto and access to the val Pusteria. Between the two forts at the beginning of the war a barbed wire fence was placed.
The two forts were already obsolete at the beginning of the conflict and therefore with their low effectiveness they were only an easy target for the Italian artillery.
In fact, the Heideck Fort was destroyed; instead Fort Mitterberg is currently in good structural conditions, still representing an example of a defensive fortification from the 19th century.
  • Rudolf Stolz Museum. It houses the works of this exponent of the family composed of the Ignaz brothers, famous portraitist, Albert and, indeed, Rudolf. Rudolf was born in Bolzano in 1874 and died in Sesto in 1960. He devoted himself in particular to the execution of frescoes in the Tyrol. The museum exhibits numerous large charcoals on paper, often used as sketches for frescoes, and then drawings, tempera and some small watercolors of particular value, depicting scenes of life and landscapes of Alta Pusteria. Other frescoes by Rudolf Stolz are exhibited in the chapel of San Giuseppe in Moso.

Sites of environmental and naturalistic interest
