Outremeuse is a popular district and very typical of Cork in Belgium. He is best known for his celebration of 15th August celebrations.

Understand

The name "Outremeuse" comes from the Walloon "Dju d'la Moûse "But in Liège, we simply say"Dju d'la As we say "In Outremeuse" and not "In Outremeuse". It is the last remaining of the natural islands created by the Meuse with, to the west, the river itself and, to the east, its derivation which is an artificially formed arm in XIXe century from the other arms of the present right bank. The neighborhood has retained, for the most part, the appearance it had in the first half of the XIXe century during the filling of the arms of the Meuse. It is also the district of wall pots. While there are many others scattered throughout the city (this tradition dates from XIVe century), there is hardly a street, a dead end or a courtyard in Outremeuse that does not have its own. The district is home to more than fifty of which thirty are classified as part of the real estate heritage of the Wallonia.

To speak

If there is one place where you will hear Walloon speaking, it is in Outremeuse: the district of Tchantchès (the other symbol of the city with the steps), from the youth of Georges simenon and 15th August celebrations, the most important festive event, not only in Liège but also in the whole region. It should also be noted that Outremeuse is "twinned" with theSacred Island To Brussels and with the Free municipality of Montmartre To Paris.

Tourist Office

Strictly speaking, Outremeuse does not have a tourist office but, apart fromLiège tourist office, it is a place where one can obtain all the specific tourist information of the district.

Story

Outremeuse in 1649 seen by Johannes Blaeu.

The urbanization of the district really begins in XIIe century along the causeway connecting the Mosane city to Aachen. This began on the banks of the Meuse at the current Chaussée des Prés, before following the current rue Puits-en-Sock, then climbing the slope of the valley via the current rue d'Amercœur.

At XIIIe century is erected an enclosure which, from the river, followed the current boulevard Saucy (then one of the branches of the Meuse called “Bief Saucy”) until the current rue Pont-Saint-Nicolas (where the door was) , before heading north along the current boulevard de l'Est and rue Georges Thones where it joined the Meuse, before following the river and returning to the “Bief Saucy”.

With the help of urbanization, a second rampart, capable of withstanding artillery fire, was built in XVIe century since the impressive "Tour en Bêche" (then the arsenal of the city and located to the south of the current Kennedy bridge) by following the current diversion of the Ourthe to the current Bressoux bridge before go up towards the river via the current rue Curtius and join, along the Meuse, the first enclosure.

At XIXe century, the remains of the first enclosure and the entire rampart were demolished; only remain 1 Quai Sainte-Barbe , on either side of Place Sainte-Barbe, a few meters from the rampart made up of blue stone rubble and adorned with crows. The Meuse and the Ourthe diversion are channeled and enclosed in their stone dikes. The arms of the river are transformed into sewers and covered to make way for new arteries: boulevard Saucy, rue Henri de Dinant and Georges Simenon, rue Jean d'Outremeuse. The district undergoes incessant transformations during this century until the construction between 1890 and 1895 of thebavarian hospital.

However, some places, such as the very commercial rue Puits-en-Sock and its adjacent streets as well as the surroundings of the place Sainte-Barbe, have kept their original character. XVIIIe century.

To go

Going to Outremeuse is really easy. The island is connected to the rest of the city by five road bridges and two pedestrian bridges on the Meuse side as well as by seven road bridges, a road tunnel and a pedestrian pedestrian bridge on the diversion side of the Ourthe.

Coming from downtown, the most direct bridges for places "to go and to be seen" are the 1 Arches bridge and the 2 Saucy pedestrian footbridge . Coming from the north, by the 3 Bias bridge at the end of the highway E25. Coming from the right bank, it will be the 4 Amercœur bridge . Coming from the south, by the 5 diversion tunnel at the end of the national road NOT30 or by the 6 longdoz bridge . Coming from the Guillemins station district or Avroy park, it will be the 7 Albert bridge 1er or the 8 pedestrian footbridge La Belle Liégeoise .

By river shuttle

Two stops of the river shuttle, namely the 1 quai Édouard Van Beneden up to thezoology institute and the 2 Godefroid Kurth quay up to the polyclinic Lucien Brull are located in Outremeuse.

By car

Motor vehicle traffic is fairly fluid outside of the Chaussée des Prés and the Rue Puits-en-Sock. These two roads are not only the most commercial in Outremeuse but also among the oldest in Liège (their route dates from the second half of the IXe century) and that their hold has not changed since the end of the XVe century.

On the parking side, there is no paid off-street parking and the main arteries are equipped with parking meters that can be supplied with coins or via the courier service. SMS. However, it should be noted that the quays, both on the Meuse side and on the diversion side of the Ourthe (except the Quai de l'Ourthe reserved for residents' parking), as well as the Boulevard de la Constitution are parked on a herringbone and free .

By bike

Cycling is hardly a problem except, as with the car and for the same reasons, on the chaussée des Prés and on the rue Puits-en-Sock. Please note that these two roads are one-way and that they are not designed as a two-way cycle route.

Walk

Considering its flat relief, getting around on foot does not represent any difficulty. The distances between two points are relatively short. Thus, crossing Outremeuse in its greatest width does not exceed 800 meters; the longest length is 3,800 meters : 1,500 meters between the tip of the Boverie park and rue Grétry (the narrowest place on the island) and 2,300 meters between this same rue Grétry and the Atlas V bridge.

To promote the safety of visually impaired people, the sidewalks near TEC bus stops are all equipped with tactile strips. Some pedestrian crossing traffic lights have an audible warning device (close beeps when the light is green for pedestrians and spaced beeps when it is red). Most sidewalks are equipped with a boat and tactile strips at the height of pedestrian crossings in order to facilitate traffic. PMR.
