It borders the region from the east Rhône-Alps, from the south with Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées, from the west with Limousinand from the north with Central Region and Burgundy. Characteristic

Geography

Auvergne, located in central France, is a land of upland and mountainous relief. A large part of the region is occupied by the Central Volcanic Massif, which culminates in Puy de Sancy (1885 m above sea level). The most important rivers in the region are the Loire, Dordogne and Allier.

The sparsely populated mountain areas of Auvergne, covered with oak and pine forests (27% of the region's area), are protected in two regional parks: Volcans d'Auvergne and Livradois-Forez.

Economy

Out of all 22 regions, it is one of the poorest in the country (GDP per capita is around 80% of the value for the entire country). Hence, the processes of rural depopulation have been observed here since the end of the 19th century.

The most important sectors of the regional economy are agriculture and tourism. Cattle breeding has developed the most. The region is famous for its cheeses, incl. bleu d'Auvergne or saint-nectaire.

Spa, mountain and congress tourism also plays a significant role. The most important spas that use local mineral water springs are: Vichy, La Bourboule, Châtel-Guyon, Mont-Dore, Saint-Nectaire.

The most important representative of the industry in this region, and at the same time the most famous company in the world, originating from Auvergne, is the manufacturer of Michelin tires, which is based in Clermont-Ferrand.

Many mountain rivers are used for the needs of hydropower, incl. Tarn, Dordogne, Cère, Lot and Truyère.
