Peine - Peine

Pain

Pain is a city in Lower Saxony.

background

Peine is a district town in central Lower Saxony and is surrounded by major cities Braunschweig, Hanover and Hildesheim on the Mittelland Canal.

The roots of the Torment Castle go back at least to the year 1130, so that Peine can already look back on almost a thousand years of history, in which the city and its citizens were mostly doing well economically, as was the status as Mint of the Diocese of Hildesheim (until 1428) proves.

In the following centuries, however, the city was also often the target of armed conflicts, first in the Hildesheim collegiate feud, later also in the Thirty Years War, when General Tilly meanwhile also had his headquarters in Peine.

In the middle of the 19th century, the city began to grow into an industrial location, which it has remained to this day - with some downturns in the meantime: the nearby former blast furnace Ilseder Hut (1858−1983), later numerous rolling mills, who refined Tormented steel, later the construction of the Mittelland Canal with the Port of torment, which also permanently secured the transport routes.

Despite the bombing of the rolling mills used for armaments production in World War II and the steel crisis in the 1970s, which each resulted in bad economic times, they are now owned by the Salzgitter AG Peiner Stahlwerke is an economic basis of the city.
