The Baja California peninsula is a region of Mexico. It is geographically made up of a peninsula and includes the states of Baja California Y Baja California Sur.
Context
Much of the Baja California coast is made up of beautiful beaches. In general, the Gulf of California is much less exposed to the open ocean than the western coast. Therefore, it tends to be less rocky and more sandy than the Pacific side.
The Pacific side is ideal for sailing, while the eastern coast is potentially more inviting for bathers. The central and southern sections are home to remote and extremely desolate deserts that include substantial mountains, large sand dunes, towering cacti, dormant volcanoes, and project an almost alien landscape similar to parts of southwest United States. En Un Desierto Place is the non-fiction account of a circumnavigation of Baja California on foot.

To buy
To eat
Baja California is famous for fish tacos; there is some disagreement about whether they were "invented" in San Felipe or Cove try both and make up your own mind !. In Mexicali Chinese restaurants are well known.
There are "restaurants" scattered along the Mex-1 highway. Most are people's houses, in which they have a couple of tables arranged on a porch. Unless you are proficient in Spanish, expect the menu to be totally foreign with no references to American-Mexican food, and expect next to no translation help from the owners. But, if you just picked something that interests you, chances are it will be delicious and unlike anything you have eaten before in the United States.
Drink and go out
Beer is often sold by the case of local distributors. Keep containers empty. The deposit makes up a large part of the price, and the bottles are not only recycled, they also get washed and reused!
The Tecate brewery is in town homonymous, in the mountains between Tijuana Y Mexicali on highway 2.
Locals distill their own tequilas from the blue agave plant (not a cactus). A common drink is tequila and sangrita (not sangria), a spiced fruit punch drunk in shots.
