To know
Geographical notes
On the mountains of Cicolano, its territory overlooks the Lake of the Salto, born artificially following the construction of the Salto dam. Its fractions of Borgo San Pietro, Teglieto and Fiumata, which were located in the valley floor, were submerged by the waters of the dam; the villages were then rebuilt on the banks of the new reservoir, and thus developed a good tourist vocation.
Background
In the past the locality was also called Petrella of Cicoli. The name derives from the Latin petra from which stone and therefore stony ground. In 1598 one of the most famous crimes of the sixteenth century took place in the Rocca di Petrella, the assassination of Count Francesco Cenci, organized by his daughter Beatrice.
Until 1927 it was part of the Province ofthe Eagle, in Abruzzo and, from 1233 to 1861, for over 600 years, it was an integral part of the Giustizierato d'Abruzzo and of the Abruzzo Ulterior II province, in the district of Cittaducale, with L'Aquila as its capital.

What see
- 1 Monastery of Santa Filippa Mareri, piazza Santa Filippa (to Borgo San Pietro). Submerged by the waters, the ancient monastery of Santa Filippa Mareri dates back to the 13th century. During the summer, when the water level of the lake drops, part of the ancient building resurfaces. The monastery was rebuilt in the new village and some finds from the ancient monastery were transported there, including works of art and the body of the saint. In the new monastery the body of the saint is kept in an urn inside a chapel with some relics, including a habit and a separate heart in a reliquary.
- In the annexed museum there is an old door and a bell of the old monastery dating back to the 16th century and numerous paintings by Giorgio de Chirico donated by the painter himself. Among the works is a self-portrait from 1960.

- In recent years the basin has become an important reference point for lovers of wakeboard. Some prestigious national and international competitions, including the European championships, are held right in the Salto Lake.
- Summer tourism destination as well as fishing, the state road 578 and a secondary road system run along the entire perimeter, making much of its waters and the numerous valley inlets that characterize it easily accessible. The surrounding mainly wooded hills, the temperatures strongly mitigated by the presence of the lake and the aforementioned road connections make it a frequent destination for hikers not only from Lazio.
