Cicolano is a region of Lazio.

To know

The Cicolano territory historically belonged to theAbruzzo, of which it retains a strong imprint. Cicolano is a sub-region of Lazio, located in the Rieti area of Eastern Lazio on the southeastern border with theAbruzzo. It includes the valley of the Salto river between the Piana di San Vittorino to the north-west, the Sabina to the west, the Duchess Mountains to the southeast. It borders the Marsica and with the Fucino to the south and the area Aquilana of the Aterno Valley (Conca Aquilana) to the east, is geomorphologically separated from it by the Apennine watershed. The region extends in a north-west south-east direction between the central ridge of theAbruzzo Apennines (mountain group of Monte Nuria) and the Carseolani Mountains (Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia), giving life to Monti del Cicolano.

When to go

The climate of the area is rather heterogeneous and is affected by the geomorphology of the area itself and the altitude. The climate is typically continental with strong daily and annual temperature variations, especially in the plain of Borgorose-Corvaro, Ponte Civitella and in the other mountain plateaus, becoming noticeably milder near the entire basin of Lago del Salto also due to the lower altitude.

Background

Cicolano was inhabited in ancient times by the Equi, a people of central Italy, who settled there after the defeat suffered by the Romans around the beginning of the fourth century BC. In the area there are some archaeological remains, including the Tumulus of Montariolo discovered in 1984 in the town of Corvaro, a hamlet of Borgorose. This structure, unique in Italy in its conformation, has a diameter of 50 m at a height of almost 4 m. Up to now, 194 tombs dating back to a rather long period of time have been found (IX-I century BC).

There county of Cicoli, owned since the Middle Ages by the Counts of Mareri, was purchased in 1532 by Cardinal Pompeo Colonna whose family it remained until the subversion of feudalism in the Palestrina-Carbognano branch, the Colonna Barberini di Sciarra. Kingdom of Naples (which he assumed, after the conclusion of the Congress of Vienna of 1815, the denomination of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies) within the province ofAbruzzo Further second with chief town L'AquilaFollowing the administrative reorganization wanted by the fascist regime, which provided for the subdivision of the territory into Regions as well as into Provinces, from 1927 the territory of Cicolano was detached from Abruzzo Ulterior Secondo as part of the Cittaducale. Therefore from that date, not taking into consideration its geographical and historical peculiarities of Abruzzo, with the creation of the Province of Rieti (region Lazio), the Cicolano territory was conferred by the Fascist regime to the new province, to which it still belongs. This territory has paid a heavy tribute to emigration; although in 1927 it had about 70,000 inhabitants, today only a little more than 10 000 remain.
