Local history

Already in Roman times there was a military camp in today's Szabadságliget district, which was probably set up at the time of Emperor Traian. Already at this time the city crossed an important trade route that connected Brigetio (Szőny) with Aquincum (Óbuda in today's Budapest). You can still find three milestones along this road in the library courtyard.

The next mention of the area can be found in the Middle Ages. There were probably several villages here (Boron, Födémes, Garancs, Kande, Királyszántó, Kürt), most of which existed before the 13th century. Most of these villages were destroyed under the Turkish rule (16-18th centuries).

After the Turks conquered the area, they built a red square plank castle in today's area of Pilisvörösvár (construction: April 6, 1543 - March 24, 1644), from which the name of the city is derived (Vörösvár = Rotburg). According to Evlija Cselebi, the perimeter of the castle built on a meadow was 1000 paces, it was surrounded by a wide moat and there were about 100 military houses on its territory. Next to the castle was a jami, an inn and five shops.

After the Turks were driven out of the country, the area was uninhabited (because of the many military operations). Of course, it was in the interests of the landlords to repopulate the formerly flourishing villages. The then landlord was called Csáky László, he was the first to come to the German settlers from the area of Black Forestit called into the country. The first settlers came in 1689, making Pilisvörösvár the first village in the area where German settlers (Danube Swabians) settled.

Hungarian-German educational institutions

German national elementary school in Pilisvörösvár

Although Pilisvörösvár is a Hungarian city, many Hungarian-German families lived in the village. Nowadays their number has fallen sharply - in the 2011 census it was around 28% - but the German-speaking schools remind us of their history and continue the tradition to the present day.

German is not only spoken in schools, but also in kindergarten. For example, the German Nationality Kindergarten is the first step in learning German. This is followed by the German national elementary school (Vásártéri) or the other nationality school (Templomtéri). From the seventh grade onwards, you can visit the Friedrich Schiller Gymnasium with its student dormitory (for foreign students).

After graduating from high school, some go to Germany or Austria to study. But there are also successful athletes at the school. There are many projects during the school year, which is why it is not uncommon for foreign students or teachers to attend the school. The school also teaches the old customs and dances of the Hungarian Germans, which is why there are extra subjects such as dance and folklore lessons.

The school is supported by the State Self-Administration of the Hungarian Germans (LdU).
