Poitou-Charentes is one of the regions of France.

The Poitou-Charentes region has a magnificent coastline and is one of the best destinations for holidays in the countryside. The local reputation is closely linked to cognac, the superb liqueur produced in this area (originally from the city of the same name).

Geographical notes

The territory of the region borders on that of the Pays de la Loire to the north-west, del Center to the northeast, del Limousin to the east andAquitaine South. The western coasts are washed by the Atlantic Ocean.

It features a marshy area called Marais Poitevin located in the ancient Gulf of Poitou on the west coast of France, just north of La Rochelle.

Background

Many Acadians, inhabitants of the northeastern regions of America such as the Nova Scotia, the New Brunswick, the Prince Edward Island, descend from the Poitou region.

Starting in 1755, in an operation that took the name of Déportation des Acadiens, 8-10,000 of these were expelled by the British and forced to emigrate to the English colonies on the east coast of North America, others were imprisoned in England.
