Wolsztyn County - Powiat wolsztyński

Wolsztyn County - poviat in Poland, in (Greater Poland Voivodeship), created in 1999 as part of the then administrative reform. Its seat is in the city Wolsztyn. The area is 680.03 km², inhabited by 57 105 inhabitants, population density 84.0 people / km², urbanization 24.2%

The poviat consists of:

The Wolsztyn County is located in the south-western part of the Greater Poland Province. It covers an area of 680 km2, of which over 58% is occupied by agricultural land and about 30% by forests. About 56,000 people live in the poviat. Wolsztyn, the capital of the poviat, has about 15,000 inhabitants. An important road connecting Poznań with Zielona Góra runs through the city; Passenger trains run on the lines connecting Wolsztyn with Poznań, Leszno and Zbąszyń.

The landscape, like the entire Polish Lowland, is of post-glacial origin. The most important element of the landscape of this area is the Warciańsko-Odrzańska (Warsaw-Berlin) Pradolina - a wide valley shaped thousands of years ago by the post-glacial waters of the Poznań phase of the Baltic glacial flowing to the west. It is up to 10 km wide, has a flat and often boggy bottom, mostly meadows intertwined with damp trees. It used to be a large swampy marsh, which was converted into agricultural land as a result of drainage works initiated in 1796.

The only altitude variation are the dunes, formed as a result of the wind immediately after the glacier recedes and rising even 27 meters above the adjacent area (on the Kapliczna Mountain 87 m above sea level between Obra and Świętno - the culmination of a large sandy field on the Pradola dune terrace).

20 years ago, 82 natural monuments were registered in the Wolsztyn Poviat, although there are many more specimens that deserve protection. Most of them were trees growing in parks. The thickest tree of the Wolsztyn County is a huge, double oak with a circumference of 850 cm at the bottom - it grows at the back of one of the properties in the center of Moch. The oak with a circumference of 780 cm in the park in Belęcin, also a double oak, is not much behind it. Old oaks with fntastic shapes in the forest near Kębłów deserve attention. There are wonderful lindens in Obra (with a circumference of up to 610 cm), and several interesting trees grow in Wolsztyn itself. There is also an interesting alley between Stara Dąbrowa and Gościniec and one erratic boulder under protection (with a circumference of 900 cm, in the forest south of Perków). Courtyard and country parks are clusters of old high greenery. There are 17 of them within the poviat, although the remains of old park layouts can be found. The largest of them are located in Chobienice, Wolsztyn (next to the palace) and Sieków, unlike anywhere else, they have been preserved here in fairly good condition.

There are 5 nature reserves in the district.

  • "Bagno Chorzemińskie", with an area of 3.66 ha, was established in 1959. It includes a mid-forest transitional peat bog located in the Dojca Valley (5 km north of Wolsztyn), which was formed in a drainless hollow of the area. Protected and rare plant species have been found here, including round-leaved and long-leaved sundews and marsh cranberries.
  • "Torfowisko nad Jeziorem Świętym", with an area of 7.59 hectares, was also established in 1959 on the shores of a small lake located 1 km west of the village of Olejnica among a forest, a transitional peat bog with vegetation characteristic of marshes has developed. Protected or rare species were found among them.
  • "Wyspa Konwaliowa", a landscape reserve with an area of 20.15 ha, was established in 1957. The protection covers an island on the Radomierskie Lake (North Przemęckie), covered with an old oak forest with an admixture of pines and birches. Due to the seclusion, a peculiar arrangement of vegetation has developed here. In the undergrowth, the May lily of the valley is massively present, including the variety with delicate pink flower veins. Visiting the reserve is possible after obtaining the consent of the Provincial Nature Conservator.
  • "Wyspa na Jezzi Chbienickim", with an area of 26.15 ha, has existed since 1959. It covers the former island (now a peninsula) on the western shore of Lake Chobienickie (1.5 km south of the village of Grójec Wielki), covered with an old pine forest with oaks and other deciduous species, surrounded by a wide strip of rushes. There is a large breeding colony of gray herons (about 200 nests).
  • In 2000, the largest of the reserves - "Trzebidzkie Lake" was established. The area of 90.71 ha, located 2 km south of Bucz, includes an overgrown body of water (27 ha deep 1.7 m) and the adjacent wetlands, reed beds and forests, including the Pomeranian-type beech forest. There is a place of existence and breeding of waterfowl and marsh birds, incl. gegaves, crane, harrier and mustache.

The water network of the described area is a reflection of the topography. The largest river of the described area is the Obra, the left tributary of the Warta, which flows out near Koźmin and flows out after 254 km near Skwierzyna.
