Worth seeing

Porąbka-Żar Power Plant It is located inside and on the surface of the Żar mountain, about 850 m above sea level, and its relative height is about 400 m. It is located in the Żywiec Beskids, about 10 km from the center of Żywiec, on the Międzybrodzki Reservoir on the Soła River.

The power plant includes a huge reservoir at the top of the mountain. It is 650 m long and 250 m wide at its widest point. The embankments are over 30 m high. It has the shape of a deltoid. It holds 2,310,000 m³ of water, the tank acts as an energy accumulator. The second reservoir located 432 meters below is the Żywiec Reservoir.

When the power plant has surplus capacity during the day, they are used to pump water to the upper reservoir. During periods of peak power demand, the water is drained from the upper reservoir and its energy is used to drive the turbines. All turbines generate 500 MW of power. The start-up time of the power plant is only 3 minutes. They function as both turbines and pumps. Pumping water into the upper reservoir at a rate of 145 m³ / sec. each of them needs 135 MW. It takes 5 hours to pump the tank fully. Then the water is discharged into the Międzybrodzkie Reservoir, driving the turbines. The operating time of the power plant with the use of water from the upper reservoir is 4 hours.

The current with a voltage of over 14 kV is transported to the switching station at the foot of the mountain. Its voltage is then increased to 120,000 V (120 kV) and passed on.

The power plant is open to visitors every Sunday on holiday. Tourists are shown around the power plant by one of its employees.

An asphalt road leads to the upper reservoir. Currently, it is closed. On a certain section of this road there is a "gravitational anomaly", which manifests itself in the rolling of objects as if uphill. Apparently, this phenomenon is an illusion. In fact, the object is rolling downhill and the observer is misreading the slope of the terrain.

The easiest way to get to the upper reservoir is to take a funicular railway (similar to Gubałówka). The cable car runs all year round. There is a restaurant upstairs.
