Prati di Tivo is a ski resort ofAbruzzo.

To know

Tourist resort, the site is one of the most characteristic and famous places in the Teramo mountains, as well as one of the access points to the major peaks of the Gran Sasso. From the locality, surrounded by Aschiero beech and almond woods, it is possible to closely observe the northern wall of the highest peak of the continental Apennines (Corno Grande) and the harshness of its limestone-dolomitic aspect.

Geographical notes

Located in the municipality of Pietracamela, at the north-eastern slopes of the Gran Sasso of Italy, the town is home to the ski resort of the same name located at the base of the northern slope of the Corno Piccolo. It is 6 km from the historic center of Pietracamela, 40 km from Teramo and falls within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.

It is one of the three ski resorts in the Province of Teramo: the other two are Prato Selva is St. James.

When to go

It is a place of winter sports but also of summer climatic stay; in fact it is a destination for tourists and sportsmen throughout the year, having a good receptive apparatus of hotel structures.

Teramo is the main urban center closest to Prati di Tivo.

Using the A14 Adriatica motorway, exit from the tollbooth of Mosciano Sant'Angelo-Giulianova (58 km), then cross Teramo and you pass by Montorio al Vomano.

From L'Aquila (71 km) you can pass through the Gran Sasso tunnel of the A24 motorway, exit at Basciano, one passes by Montorio al Vomano or for the Pass of the Capannelle using the SS 80 (66 km).

  • Ski. In winter it is popular for its ski facilities which include downhill alpine ski slopes and relative ski lifts. At the foot of the northern slope of Corno Piccolo, accessible from piazzale Carlo Amarocchi, are the ski slopes and the relative ski lifts, such as:
  • "The Madonnina"- the historic single-seater chairlift, in service from the fifties until summer 2008, has given way to a brand new and modern mixed system of four-seater chairlift and eight-seater gondola with automatic coupling (the first of its kind in Italy), inaugurated on December 20, 2009 and cost € 12,500,000 with a maximum hourly capacity of 1,800 people, up to an altitude of 2,050m for a difference in height of 600m, where a demanding "black" runway (not yet open) or up to an altitude of 1,750m starts. , at the intermediate station (not accessible from the cabins), where an interesting "red" slope starts. To ensure greater safety of use, a series of automatic anti-avalanche measures have also been introduced on the descent of the Arapietra and all the enormous boulders present on the slope.
  • "Prati di Tivo"- four-seater chairlift with fixed coupling, 450 meters long, with a capacity of 2,185 people per hour up to an altitude of 1,550 meters, on a height difference of 110 meters, slope difficulty: red / blue;
  • "Middle pylon"- two-seater chairlift with fixed coupling, 910 meters long, with a capacity of 1,198 people per hour up to an altitude of 1,810 meters, on a difference in height of 320 meters, difficulty: red;
  • "Jolly"- double ski lift, 293 meters long, with a capacity of 720 people per hour up to an altitude of 1,440 meters, on a vertical drop of 45 meters, difficulty: blue / school slope.

There is also a cross-country ski track, a snow park and a ski bus service to reach Prati di Tivo.

  • Hiking and mountaineering. In summer, the town offers various possibilities for trekking and mountaineering with climbs of varying degrees of difficulty, difficult rock climbing or simple walks in the beech woods. The walks that lead to different places are characteristic, such as:
  • Madonnina del Gran Sasso in the locality Arapietra - the place, as well as on foot, can also be reached by cableway which reaches an altitude of 2,015 meters. From here, it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to walk to the Franchetti refuge.
  • Franchetti Refuge - reception building at an altitude of 2,433 meters between Corno Grande and Corno Piccolo. The refuge (with 23 beds) is an excellent starting point for excursions and climbing on the Gran Sasso.
  • Ascensions to the Great Horn and al Small Horn, along the respective northern and eastern sides.
  • Springs of the Arno river - through the Rio Arno Valley, Val Maone and Campo Pericoli it is possible to take a long traverse and reach Campo Imperatore, while passing the saddle of Cima Alta, which can be reached by taking the road that continues to the left on piazzale Amorocchi, you can arrive in the district of the municipality of Gran Sasso Island.
