Puerto del Carmen is the largest resort on the Canary Island Lanzarote.
background
More than half of all tourists spend their holidays in Lanzarote in Puerto del Carmen. The place was originally just a small fishing port, now it has more than 10,000 inhabitants and is larger than the administrative center, the municipality Tías.
getting there
By plane
Arrecife Airport is only 10 km from the center of the town. The taxi from the airport costs around € 15 to 20.
By bus
There are bus connections to Arrecife and after Playa Blanca, they run about every hour during the day.
In the street
Distance to Arrecife: approx. 15 km, to Playa Blanca approx. 25 km. The road network is good and is currently (2012) being generously expanded.
By boat
mobility
The place is relatively spacious, it is practically only a narrow, approx. 10 km long strip of land along the partly quite hilly coast.
There are special taxis for wheelchair users at no extra charge. You should ask for it when you order.
Tourist Attractions
The old town center, La Tiñosa is in the west of Puerto del Carmen, except for the harbor basin and the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen dating from 1890, there isn't much to see.

Well-stocked small mall, mostly designed for local customers. Dress sizes for "normal" Germans are therefore rather the exception.
"Fundgrube" is a chain of stores that is widespread all over the Canary Islands and offers fashion accessories, handbags, cosmetics, some clothes and lots of cigarettes. The prices of most product groups correspond to those in normal supermarkets, they are comparable to those in the duty-free shops of the Canary Islands airports.
Along the beach promenade there are numerous small shops with fashionable articles, mostly of poor quality. They are often run by traders who look Chinese and their range of goods and prices are interchangeable. It is similar with electronic items, here the dealers predominantly make an Indian impression.
Everyday goods can easily be purchased in supermarkets such as Lidl or Spar.
kitchen
There are numerous restaurants with Canarian cuisine, and of course international fast food chains are also represented.
nightlife
accommodation
There are numerous hotels and apartment complexes in Puerto del Carmen. They often work with travel providers in individual countries. There are individual hotels in which almost only Scandinavians live, most of the hotels are occupied by guests from Great Britain and German holidaymakers.
- Hotel Los Fariones (****), C / Roque del Este 1, 35510 Puerto del Carmen. Tel.: 34 928 510 175. The hotel is one of the oldest houses in Puerto del Carmen, has its own small stretch of beach right next to the house and has access to Playa Grande. The complex is well maintained, the kitchen is above average.
- LanzaroteLanzarote.com (****), 35510 Puerto del Carmen. Tel.: 34 633468311. Apartments and holiday homes for holiday rental.
health
Along the Avenida de las Playas there are several private clinics with staff who have knowledge of German, English or Scandinavian languages.
- Hospitalling, Lomo Gordo s / n, Puerto del Carmen, Tías. Tel.: 34 928 596 171, 34 900 707 777 (Freephone).
Practical advice
Anyone expecting a quiet place and beautiful nature surrounding it will be disappointed: In addition to various bars and restaurants in the area of the harbor and kitschy tourist shops along the beach promenade, there are mainly barren "lunar landscapes" to visit. The roads often have a steep incline, which is why less sporty people and especially wheelchair users should expect problems here.
