background

Church in Yaiza

The place Yaiza with its neat little white houses is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. The streets are lined with trees all around Plaza de los Remedios are the town hall, a church and the culture house.

Yaiza was almost completely destroyed during the great volcanic eruption (1730-1736). Some of the neighboring communities were completely buried under the lava, however Yaiza was rebuilt. However, cultivation of the fields was no longer possible in the old form, and so the farmers had to come up with something. The viticulture in the area around the hamlet shows that they have succeeded La Geria. Lava stones are piled up to form walls, they protect the vines from the wind and provide them with moisture from the night dew.

Yaiza is neighboring town Uga, it's known as Sleeping place for dromedaries, these animals transport tourists through the nearby fire mountains in the daytime Timanfaya National Park. The tourist center Playa Blanca is described in a separate article.

The namesake of the church San Marcial is also the patron saint of Lanzarote, his festival is celebrated annually on July 7th.

El Golfo

Charco de los Clicos, El Golfo

The small town of El Golfo is located on the west coast at the foothills of the Timanfaya Fire Mountains. Its main attraction is a crater half submerged in the sea, called "Charco de los Clicos". Most of it is cut off from the sea by a black sand barrier. The remaining part of the crater is filled with a deep green liquid with a salt content that is said to be higher than that of the Dead Sea.

Los Hervideros

South of El Golfo, the Atlantic coast is very bizarre. The surf has washed out real caves from the lava rocks, and the strong current makes it look as if the water is boiling. The "Los Hervideros" lookout point was created at a particularly attractive point, and it is worth a stop. Flying traders are usually there too.

Salinas de Janubio

Salinas de Janubio

In the Laguna de Janubio are salt marshes, they were created at the end of the 19th century. The salt is sold all over the island as a souvenir, it is slightly cheaper here.

La Geria

La Geria is a small place on the edge of the Timanfaya National Park and known for its viticulture. The cultivation method is extraordinary, it was developed after the volcanic eruptions of 1730-1736 and it also looks aesthetically pleasing. The vineyards consist of numerous regular depressions in which the vines grow. Here, the thick layer of lapilli was largely removed and wind protection walls were built from larger volcanic stones. The wines produced here can also be tasted on the spot.
