When to go
Background
Ravello was founded in the 5th century as a place of refuge from the incursions of the barbarians that marked the fall of the Western Roman Empire, but according to legend, Amalfi patricians immigrated there following a clash between several factions of the Amalfi upper class, which almost resulted in in a civil war. At the behest of the Norman Ruggero, son of Roberto il Guiscardo, Ravello became a bishopric in 1086 to contrast the too powerful Amalfi. In 1135 it managed to withstand the attacks brought by the Pisans to the Duchy of Amalfi, but two years later, in 1137, it had to succumb, was sacked and destroyed. Following the devastation, its economic and demographic decline began: starting from the fourteenth century many of its inhabitants moved to Naples and its surroundings even if in 1400 the patricians of Ravello were still very active: an example were the Rufolos, bankers of the Kingdom of Naples. ; it was the very heavy tax system of the inefficient Spanish government that caused its decline, which lasted until the end of the 18th century. From the 19th century, rediscovered by intellectuals and artists, it regained its importance as a culturally elitist place of tourism.

- 1 Ravello Cathedral. It was founded in 1086-1087 on the model of the abbey of Montecassino: the architraves of the three doors in the facade date back to this period. Noteworthy is the central portal, with bronze panels, the work of Barisano da Trani dated 1179. The two-storey bell tower, with mullioned windows and intertwined arches, dates back to the 13th century. In the 18th century the portico in front of the facade was demolished. Inside, two splendid ambo with marble inlays enrich it facing each other: on the right the ambo of the Gospel, by Nicola di Bartolomeo da Foggia (1272), and on the left another of Byzantine derivation, with the depiction of the biblical episode of the prophet Jonah and of the sea monster, donated by the second bishop of Ravello. In the seventeenth-century chapel to the left of the presbytery is kept, according to tradition, the ampoule of the blood of San Pantaleone, a relic already present in Ravello in 1112 and which, every year, presents the phenomenon of liquefaction.
- Villa Cimbrone.
- Villa Rufolo.
Events and parties
- Ravello Festival. Classical music festival, continues the tradition of Wagnerian concerts established by the historical mayor Luigi Mansi to honor S.M. Vittorio Emanuele III during his stay in the City of Music. It lasts all summer and consists of wonderful concerts in wonderful stages like the one, very romantic and with a superb view of the sea, of Villa Rufolo.
- Goblets of Stars. The Ravello edition of this national brand recalls the tradition of Grape festival, where the natural propensity of the city to the production of wine was celebrated. Remember in fact, in addition to the presence of Ravello DOC, that the first Italian wine to be exported to the USA was the Ravellese Gran Caruso!.
- Ravello Concert Society. Delocalized classical music festival, which proposes the tradition of the Ravello Festival in secondary frames compared to Villa Rufolo but no less wonderful and noteworthy present in the Ravello area.
- San Pantaleone (Patronal feast).
July 27. The party coincides with the Blood miracle, or the miraculous liquefaction of the blood of San Pantaleone preserved in the Cathedral. The saint was a doctor, and the miracle occurs annually; it does not happen in cases of misfortune for society, and it happens exceptionally when the saint intercedes for miracles (as already happened during the CoVid19 epidemic).
