Norte region (Portuguese for Northern region) is the oldest region in Portugal and is historically linked to the emergence of the kingdom. The second largest city in the country, Porto is here in the north.
Regions
The Norte region subdivide again into the following 4 regions:
- Porto (region) - The city postage and the surrounding area.
- Minho - The fertile land in the northwest of Porto on the Atlantic coast with the cities Guimarães and Braga as well as the Peneda-Gerês National Park.
- Douro valley - The scenic, deeply cut and lined with vineyards river valley of the Douro, in the upper course of which the grapes for the port wine grow.
- Trás-os-Montes - The drier and barren landscape "behind the mountains" in the northeast.
