Guided nature reserve Zompo lo Schioppo is located in the municipality of Morino (province ofthe Eagle), in Abruzzo.

To know

It was inaugurated in 1987 and extends entirely into the municipal area of Morino on the left bank of the Roveto Valley. Its streams flow into the Liri river which crosses the entire valley of the same name. In the protected area there is the highest natural waterfall of all the central Apennines after those of the waterfall of the green of Borrello, in the province of Chieti. In the autumn-winter period, at the height of the water flow, the waterfall offers a jump of over 80 meters.

Flora and fauna

Flora

Depending on the altitude, the typical flora of high mountain pastures is found, while between 900 and 1800 meters the woods of Fagus sylvatica abound, which in the reserve due to the cool microclimate of the gorges and valleys it is possible to find sporadic specimens already from 500 meters above sea level, not far from typically Mediterranean elements such as the holm oak and the strawberry tree.

Traces of the Mediterranean also reach higher peaks.

Among the most valuable species from a conservation point of view, the frequent presence of Taxus baccata in the beech wood is noted, valuable for the size and state of conservation of the specimens, in a vegetal association with beech and holly, very rare in Italy. There are also many rare or endemic orchids from Abruzzo. Another noteworthy species is the carnivorous Pinguicula vulgaris.

Below 900 meters, the plant landscape is mainly characterized by mixed woods with Turkey oak, downy oak, black and white hornbeam, chestnut, lime, various species of maple and the rare farnetto.

Fauna

The reserve is frequented by various species of woodpeckers present in Italy, in addition to the very rare golden eagle, the sparrow hawk, the peregrine falcon and the alpine chough. Among the nocturnal birds of prey, the imposing and rare eagle owl, the barn owl and the owl. But also from Apennine wolves, roe deer, wild boar, baby octopus and foxes.

Background

The park was established thanks to the regional law of 29 May 1987 n. 24, of the Abruzzo Region. The particular name of the reserve, in Italian means "Salto dello sparo", is the result of a dialect expression and undoubtedly derives from the long jump of the main waterfall which, falling on the underlying rocks, inevitably causes a loud roar.
