Background

The Long lake and the Ripasottile lake are the residues of a large lake which in ancient times covered a large part of the Piana Reatina: the Velino lake, reclaimed by the ancient Romans with the creation of an opening in the mountains surrounding the plain and the outflow of lake waters with the creation of the waterfall marmore. Other reclamation interventions have occurred over the centuries, in order to counter the re-swamping of the valley and the flooding of the Velino river (called pianara).

The naturalistic interest in the area began only in the seventies. At the end of that decade Enel proposed a project that provided for the hydroelectric exploitation of the two lakes, which however aroused much criticism and was blocked by the Rieti municipal council of the time. Furthermore, the protests following the approval of the freeway caused a sensation Rieti-Terni, which in the initial projects should have passed between the two lakes as the old state road and was then built on another route.

These two cases, as well as the danger represented by the expansion of Rieti towards the north, accelerated the process towards the protection of the area. The reserve was officially established with the regional law n. 94 of June 17, 1985.
