The federal district is located in the southwest of the Russian Federation Southern Russia. It has a common inner-Russian border with the federal districts Central Russia and Volga in the north and North Caucasus in the south. There are also common limits with the Ukraine and with Kazakhstan.

Southern Russia is one of 8 federal districts in Russia and is thus roughly comparable to a German or Austrian federal state. Southern Russia is not a historically grown region, it was created by President Putin in 2000. In 2009 some regions were split off and the newly created federal district North Caucasus slammed.

The winters are quite mild by Russian standards. It can get hot as early as May. In summer the maximum values are around 30 degrees. Summer lasts until the end of September and until November it is warmer than in Germany. December there is normal winter weather again with the exception of the Black Sea coast.
