The city Saint-Leu is located on the climatically favorable west coast of Réunion and is important as a seaside resort due to its pebble beach.

Agriculture is economically important in the place with a focus on the production of coffee, sugar cane and geranium. Coastal and deep-sea fishing is also important. The breeding of sea turtles in Pointe-des-Châteaux is now only for scientific and tourist purposes. In the past, the production of lime from corals (the last lime kiln on the island was in operation in Saint-Leu) and the extraction of sea salt (the last plant was closed in 1970) were also important.

By plane

The International Airport for Reunion is Roland Garros at the capital Saint-Denis in the north of the island. This airport has daily connections to Paris and other places in France via Air France and Air Austral (the airline Réunions).

There are no direct flights from Germany, Austria or Switzerland, the approach is with a change in the region, e.g. on Mauritius possible.

A another airport the island is Pierrefonds airport at Saint-Pierre in the south of the island, from here there are regional connections to Mauritius and Madagascar.

Farther from the airports by bus or rental car, there are no rail routes on Réunion.

By bus

Saint Leu is due to the Bus routesA. & A1 (Express line on the RN1 along the west coast) and B.: Saint-Denis - Saint-Paul - Saint-Gilles-les-Bains - Saint-Leu - Saint-Louis - Saint-Pierre, Total travel time for the route approx. One and a half hours at € 4.20 (maximum tariff). The bus routes operates CAR JAUNE, Identification color yellow.

There is a connection to the lines from the bus station in Saint-Denis F. and G to the east of the island, line H (island crossing in the east of the island to Saint-Benoit) and line I to Saint-Philippe in the south of the island start from the bus station in Saint-Pierre.

The buses run in the morning on weekdays from around 4.30 a.m. (on Sundays and public holidays much later) until around 6 p.m. in the evening, roughly every hour.

In the street

Saint-Leu is located on the RN 1 along the west coast, and the "Route des Tamarins" motorway from Saint-Paul to L'Étang-Salé, which opened in June 2009, runs right past the village with a junction.

  • L'Église Sainte-Ruffine. Built in several phases from 1790 to 1885 in basalt stones.
  • L'Eglise du Sacré-Coeur (Sacred Heart Church). Another of the few stone churches on the island, with wooden ribbed vaults. Consecrated in January 1865 and renovated in 1994. In the town center.
  • La Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette (Our Lady of La Salette). Pilgrimage church on a hill above the town center. Built in 1859 on the occasion of a plague and cholera epidemic brought in by seafarers. The annual pilgrimage on September 19th with thousands of pilgrims is one of the largest on the island.
