To know
The ever-increasing importance of its thermal baths has determined the addition of the name of the locality to the official name of the Municipality of Godiasco, of which it was only a fraction, making it become Godiasco Salice Terme. It is part of the Authentic Villages of Italy.
Geographical notes
In theOltrepò Pavese, on the left bank of the Staffora, is 10 km from Voghera, 39 from Pavia, 16 from Tortona, 45 from Alexandria.
When to go
The Baths operate from February to the end of the year. The best season for those who also want to find a good climate is from spring to autumn; in fact, the summer is not sultry as in the rest of the Po Valley, since Salice enjoys the immediate proximity of the hills, on which its more recent districts develop, and an ever-windy climate, favored by the great wealth of greenery.
Background
The life of the locality was always linked to the nearby centers of Voghera, Rivanazzano is Godiasco; the territory saw settlements of Ligurian populations, then the Romans until the affirmation of powerful families: the Malaspina, the Visconti, the Sforza. In the mid-eighteenth century Salice enters the Savoy dominions, to then converge in the Italian unity.
The engine of its development was the presence in its territory of springs of saline thermal waters, for which it was already known in ancient and Roman times, being called locum Salis, from which the toponymic Salice arose. In the nearby Montalfeo an ancient sulfur mine then led in 1873 to the discovery of sulphurous waters which were channeled and used since 1906.
The development of the thermal baths has led to a consequent commercial development in Salice with catering establishments, hotels, climatic accommodation houses, making the locality, while remaining quiet, one of the most popular spas for Lombard users and the neighbor Piedmont.
How to orient yourself
The tiny ancient nucleus is all around the church of the Nativity of Mary, with stone houses and a few buildings. This area is flat, on the bank of the Staffora. The nineteenth and early twentieth century expansion has the via delle Terme, around which all the Art Nouveau building of noble villas developed, whose monument the most significant is undoubtedly the disused Grand Hotel delle Terme, immersed in its magnificent large park.
Construction from the 1960s onwards has manifested itself with the construction of additional hotels and villas scattered along the tree-lined avenues that climb the hill and then enter the mountain, where you can meet very small ancient nuclei of a few stone houses, sometimes with characteristic churches.
Among the inhabited areas that surround Salice, the agglomeration of is unquestionably the most interesting Montalfeo, where an ancient castle has been recovered and transformed into a restaurant also equipped with rooms for conferences as well as for receptions.
