The name of the town derives from the Latin Sanctus Theodorus, from which derives the contracted form Santu 'Eru, erroneously translated into Italian as "San Vero".

The area was already inhabited in the Nuragic era due to the presence on the territory of some archaeological remains, including a nuraghe.

In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea and was part of the curatoria of Simaxis, of which Simaxis was the capital. At the fall of the Giudicato (1410) it became part of the Marquisate of Oristano. Upon the defeat of the marquisate during the Aragonese conquest of Sardinia, it passed under the Aragonese dominion and fell into the possession of the Carroz family. Around 1767 it was incorporated into the Marquisate of Arcais, a fief of the Nurra family, from whom it was redeemed in 1839 with the suppression of the feudal system.

In 1928 the municipality was suppressed and became a hamlet of Simaxis.

The town was transferred to the Salto di Sant'Elena, along the state road 388 (between Simaxis and Ollastra) in the Fascist era, after the old center had been almost totally destroyed by a flood of the Tirso river.

The past story of the small town was told, albeit through toponyms of pure invention, in the Sardinian-language comedy Basciura, from Oristano Antonio Garau.
