Background

Overview of San Vincenzo Superiore

The medieval village, dating back to around the year one thousand, developed near the church dedicated to San Vincenzo. The whole territory of San Vincenzo suffered serious damage due to the earthquake in Avezzano in 1915. After this dramatic event a part of the town moved further downstream along the state road 82 of the Valle del Liri. Over the years, the original villages located in the highest part of the Roveto Valley have been painstakingly rebuilt.

The semi-uninhabited villages have been slowly rebuilt and are a holiday destination especially in summer. While the village of Roccavivi, the most populous hamlet of the municipality, is located further south of the Roveto Valley on the slopes of Mount Pizzo Deta (2,041 meters above sea level).
  • 1 Piccolomini Castle of Morrea, Via Castello (fraction of Morrea), 39 0863 958114, fax: 39 0863 958369, @. The Piccolomini castle dominates the semi-uninhabited village of Morrea. Built in the 15th century by the Piccolomini family who held power and control over the entire Marsica county. Example of Renaissance architecture, it suffered serious damage due to the earthquake of 1915 and is in need of restoration works. With a rectangular plan it has four circular towers and the shapes of a palace.
  • 2 Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, Roccavecchia locality (fraction of Roccavivi), 39 0863 958114, fax: 39 0863 958369, @. The sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie is also called the sanctuary of Roccavecchia. Following the avalanche that destroyed the town in 1616, the inhabited center was relocated further down and the place of worship restored. The original building, dedicated to San Silvestro, presumably dates back to the 12th century, while the first news of the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie dates back to the 17th century.
  • 3 Church of Santa Restituta, State Road 82 of the Liri Valley (Le Rosce - Santa Restituta, crossroads of Morrea Vecchia), 39 0863 958114, fax: 39 0863 958369, @. The church, originally also dedicated to San Bartolomeo, is one of the oldest places of worship in the Roveto valley. Named for the first time in a document of 997 reported by the work Chronica monasterii Casinensis by Leone Marsicano, it preserves a fresco dating back in all probability between the ninth and tenth centuries in which Restituta di Sora is depicted. Severely damaged by the Marsica earthquake of 1915 and by the allied bombings of 1944, it was rebuilt for the second time larger than the original design in the 1950s.
