To know

How to orient yourself

The Center of Santa Cruz (Ifara) hinges on the roundabout plaza de España located near the pier where ferries and hydrofoils from Cadiz and from the other Canary Islands. It starts from the plaza de España Calle Castillo, a shopping street transformed into a pedestrian area. Avenida Anaga it is the stretch of promenade north of plaza de España. There are renowned night clubs and the Museo Militar de Almeyda

In the La Salud-La Salle district, south of the center, is the Tenerife auditorium, a futuristic structure inaugurated on September 26, 2003 based on a project by architect Santiago Calatrava Valls and becoming a symbol of the city. Nearby are the twin towers of Santa Cruz, a residential complex completed in 2006 to a design by architect Julian Valladares. The towers are the tallest constructions in the Canaries (120 m.). Also in the same district are the exhibition spaces (Centro Internacional de Ferias y Congresos de Tenerife) from where the Santa Cruz carnival parades often start.

Onavenida Tres de Mayo there is the "Intercambiador", the modern suburban bus station and nearby the El Corte Inglés department stores present in every city of Spain

How to get

By bus

Intercambiador is Santa Cruz's modern suburban bus station. It is located on the Avenida Tres de Mayo. The buses of the TITSA bus lines (Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife) terminate there [1] coming from other places on the island. At the exit of the station you will find the trams of line 1 which, after crossing the center, terminate at San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

What see

  • Iglesia Matriz de La Concepción, Plaza Iglesia. It was erected in 1498 on the site where two years earlier the Spanish conquistador Alonso Fernández de Lugo planted a cross as a sign of thanks for the victory in battle over the Guanches. The cross (Santa Cruz de la Conquista) is visible on the altar inside the temple. The church as we see it today dates back to the 18th century
  • Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, Calle Fuente Morales. Mummies from the time of the Guanches are exhibited in the museum. The best preserved is the mummy of San Andrés, so called by the village in which it was found. It belonged to a young man between 25 and 30, probably a prince, and was found wrapped in goat skins in a cave on Mount Anaga. Another interesting piece exhibited in the rooms of the museum is the "Piedra Zanata", a stone carved in the shape of a fish that bears inscriptions which are not deciphered but probably in the Tifinagh alphabet used by some Berber populations in the Punic era. The stone could demonstrate a Carthaginian presence in Tenerife.
  • Municipal De Bellas Artes Museum, Calle de José Murphy 12, 34 922 283 437. There are works by Brueghel and Rodin on display
  • Militar de Almeyda Museum, Calle San Isidro 1. Ecb copyright.svgFree admission. There are weapons and model ships on display
  • Castillo de San Juan.

Events and parties

  • Carnival. The Santa Cruz Carnival, a modern bacchanal full of euphoria, has acquired worldwide resonance and to participate in it you need to book a hotel room at least 3 months in advance.
  • Festival de Música de Canarias. It takes place between January and February. The shows are staged in the auditorium and the Guimerá theater.
