Cadiz is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe. It was probably the Phoenician merchants of Tire who founded the city as a trading post and military post. Archaeologically proven, it is a settlement from the 8th century BC. According to legend, Heracles was the founder of the city. The coat of arms of the city refers to it with the inscription "Hercules Fundator Gadium Dominatorque" (founder of Hercules and ruler of Cadiz). The name of the city derives from the Phoenician Gadir (fortress). After the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and later the Romans ruled Cadiz and caused a great economic boom.

In the 5th century A.D. Cadiz was destroyed by the Visigoths and from the 8th century the Moors rebuilt it under the name of Djesirat Cadiz. In 1262 Alfonso X freed Cadiz from the Moors.

After the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, Cadiz flourished again thanks to trade with overseas colonies, but it also became a target of piracy and looters. In the 16th century, Cadiz managed to repel a series of raids by Algerian pirates, but was sacked by Francis Drake in 1587 and almost completely destroyed by the British in 1596. As a result, the city was heavily fortified in the following centuries. Much of the city walls, the fortresses "Castillo Santa Catalina" (17th century) and "San Sebastian" (18th century), the "Baluarte de Candelaria" and the city gate "Puertas de Tierra" (18th century) are well preserved. As a port city on the coast, Cadiz retained great importance, especially since the colonial trade from Seville (Seville can be reached by small maritime ships via the Guadaquivir) was transferred to Cadiz starting in the 18th century. In March 1812, the first short-lived Spanish constitution (La Pepa) was proclaimed in Cadiz, which was besieged by the French.

Events and parties

What to do

Cadiz is together with Tenerife the absolute stronghold of the carnival in Spain. Hundreds of thousands visit Cadiz during the carnival period.

Another highlight, like everywhere in Spain, is Holy Week ("semana santa"). From Palm Sunday to Holy Saturday, the streets of the historic center become the stage for the presentation of the Passion of Christ, a tradition that has its roots in the 16th century.

Numerous museums and monuments invite you to a cultural tour of the city.

  • 1 Rota Club de Golf, Poblado Naval Zona 11, 2419, 11530 El Puerto de Sta Maria, 34 956822260.

Festival

Cadiz has a great flamenco tradition. Several times a week it is possible to attend flamenco shows in the flamenco hall "La Cava".

There is also an annual Ibero-American music festival called "Manuel de Falla". Concerts take place in the Gran Teatro Falla and in other public spaces. The Ibero-American Theater Festival is held every year in October.

Beaches

With the central 2 Playa la Victoria and the surrounding beach sections, the city of Cadiz has a 9km long city beach. Despite the length, it will be difficult to find a free seat on weekends in July and August. In the historic center there is the 3 Playa la Caleta at the center of which is the Centro de Arqueología Subacuática.

Shopping

  • 1 Mercado de Abastos (In the historic center near Plaza de las Flores and Plaza Tompete). The best place to buy fresh groceries. It is also worth seeing if you are not buying anything. The fish selection is overwhelming.
  • Calle Nueva, near Plaza Juan de Dios, Calle Compañia from Plaza Catedral to Plaza de las Flores and Calle Columela are just some of the pedestrian shopping streets of the old city. Due to the frequent arriving cruise ships, the working life is even busier and more extensive than usual. All of this is common here. In the new town there are the "El Corte Ingles" shopping center and the "Carrefour" supermarket.
