Cadiz is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe. It was probably the Phoenician merchants of Tire who founded the city as a trading post and military post. Archaeologically proven, it is a settlement from the 8th century BC. According to legend, Heracles was the founder of the city. The coat of arms of the city refers to it with the inscription "Hercules Fundator Gadium Dominatorque" (founder of Hercules and ruler of Cadiz). The name of the city derives from the Phoenician Gadir (fortress). After the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians and later the Romans ruled Cadiz and caused a great economic boom.
In the 5th century A.D. Cadiz was destroyed by the Visigoths and from the 8th century the Moors rebuilt it under the name of Djesirat Cadiz. In 1262 Alfonso X freed Cadiz from the Moors.
After the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, Cadiz flourished again thanks to trade with overseas colonies, but it also became a target of piracy and looters. In the 16th century, Cadiz managed to repel a series of raids by Algerian pirates, but was sacked by Francis Drake in 1587 and almost completely destroyed by the British in 1596. As a result, the city was heavily fortified in the following centuries. Much of the city walls, the fortresses "Castillo Santa Catalina" (17th century) and "San Sebastian" (18th century), the "Baluarte de Candelaria" and the city gate "Puertas de Tierra" (18th century) are well preserved. As a port city on the coast, Cadiz retained great importance, especially since the colonial trade from Seville (Seville can be reached by small maritime ships via the Guadaquivir) was transferred to Cadiz starting in the 18th century. In March 1812, the first short-lived Spanish constitution (La Pepa) was proclaimed in Cadiz, which was besieged by the French.

Shopping
