Territories and tourist destinations

Urban centers

  • Candelaria - Center of 22,000 inhabitants, Candelaria has little tourist interest.
  • El Médano - Known in the past as puerto de Granadilla, El Médano is now one of the most popular seaside resorts in Tenerife thanks to its 2 km long white sandy beach and its shallow waters. The winds that often blow here mean that the resort is also appreciated by those who practice windsurfing and kitesurfing.
  • Garachico - Lying on a rocky stretch of coast, Garachico has partly preserved its authentic character thanks to the lack of sandy coasts that have not enticed international hotel tourism investors.
  • Icod de los Vinos - Characteristic village founded in the 15th century
  • La Orotava - In the fertile valley of the same name at the foot of Mount Teide, La Orotava offers good opportunities for lovers of hiking.
  • The Victoria de Acentejo - The place where on 25 December 1494 the invading Castilian army defeated the Guanches in battle, thus securing possession of Tenerife.
  • Las Galletas - At the south-eastern end of Tenerife, Las Galletas is another seaside resort devoted to mass tourism but in a less booming way than Playa de las Américas. The rocky stretch of coast is home to black sand beaches. Ironically it is called "Costa del Silencio".
  • Los Cristianos - In the not far 60s it was a fishing village, now it is a tourist center more for families and retirees in search of tranquility than for lovers of nightlife. A beautiful beach and the port, from which ferries leave for the nearby islands of La Gomera and La Palma, are enclosed in the small gulf, another beautiful beach usually frequented by tourists is located in the nearby Playa de las Vistas.
  • Masca - A small village of just 120 inhabitants and at 750 m. of altitude.
  • Playa de las Américas - Once a small fishing village, Playa de las Américas is now the largest seaside resort in Tenerife devoted to mass tourism and suitable for extroverted types who will not fail to appreciate the lively nightlife. It forms a single urban agglomeration with the center of Los Cristianos. The beaches are of fine white sand brought here from the nearby Sahara.
  • Puerto de Santiago - Ancient port of Santiago del Tiede, the town of Puerto de Santiago is today a seaside resort famous for a high and rocky stretch of coast in its vicinity called "Los Gigantes". It is the best address in Tenerife for those who love exploring the seabed.
  • Puerto de la Cruz - The oldest traditional tourist center in Tenerife, already popular in the times of Queen Victoria for its thermal baths.
  • San Cristóbal de La Laguna (or The Lagoon) - Just 16 km from Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal de La Laguna has preserved a historic center of considerable interest.
  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife - Capital and major center of the Canary Islands.

How to get

By plane

There are 2 airports on the island: Tenerife South and Tenerife North.Otherwise known as Los Rodeos Airport, Tenerife North Airport (TFN) is a small facility in the municipality of Laguna, dedicated mainly to domestic flights mostly from mainland Spain and the other islands of the archipelago. The other facility, Tenerife South-Reina Sofia Airport (TFS), is the most important of the island's airports, dedicated to the management of most European flights.

The North Airport is located approximately 11km / 7 miles west of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital. Easily accessible by either the TF-1 or TF-5, the airport is connected to the Parque Nacional del Teide by the TF-24.

From both airports it is possible to travel by public transport, by renting a car or by taxi.
