Garachico is a small town on the north coast of Tenerife.

background

The town of Garachico was founded around 1500 by Italian merchants. The economic basis was the cultivation of sugar cane and wine, and the place soon became the most important port on the north coast. After a devastating city fire in 1697 and the eruption of the volcano Montaña de Trevejo in 1706, which buried much of the city and the port with lava, the city lost its importance.

The village was rebuilt on the lava flows of the volcano, but parts of the old village have been preserved. On the coast of Garachico you can still see the lava flows that have poured into the sea here. During the week it is very quiet here, apart from the tourist buses that come through here and enjoy inexpensive lunches here. There is a little more going on at the weekend. But then it is often the locals who enjoy life.

Tourist Attractions

Entrance to the fort
  • Castillo de San Miguel. The Castillo directly at the former port is a little more attractive from the outside. Inside is a small, lovingly designed museum, in which the history of the city and the fort, the volcanic eruption of 1706 and the peculiarities of flora and fauna are vividly presented for an entry price of € 2. Unfortunately, the information boards are only in Spanish.
  • Within the city wall there are a total of 4 former monasteries, the most important buildings are around the Plaza de Juan Gonzalez de la Torre.

activities

Santa Ana Church

A long walk through the town is definitely worth it. Here you can see very well what was left of the village after the volcanic eruption and what was then rebuilt. A walk along the beach road is definitely worth it. The rugged stone coast is very nice to look at. On days off, many locals lie in the sun here and have a good time.
