Alfombra

Alfombra
Town hall square La Orotava, picture made of volcanic earth for the feast of Corpus Christi

Alfombra is the Spanish word for carpet. In Catholic areas, the feast of Corpus Christi is usually celebrated on the 2nd Thursday after Pentecost, i.e. on Thursday June 3, 2021. A procession then takes place in many communities, and the processional path is often decorated with carpets of flowers. There are also in La Orotava Alfombras The creation of these ephemeral works of art is in the hands of local residents, their families or friends, it takes place on the evening before Corpus Christi or in the early morning.

There is, however, a world-famous peculiarity: in addition to the usual flower carpets on the street, a picture of around 900 m² is made out of sand or powdered volcanic stones on the town hall square. The creation of this picture takes some time, so that weeks before the festival you can see the creation of this work of art from the upper steps of the town hall stairs.
