background

Oberhalbstein / Sotgôt seen from Piz Arlos

The village of Savognin emerged from three old districts, which are still recognizable despite the heavy overbuilding, also because of their three churches.

Savognin is located in the middle of the wide Sotgôt basin, the valley Oberhalbstein, which today is officially called Talschaft Surses carries - i.e. on the north side of the Julier Pass. Until 1890 it was officially known as Schweiningen (Italian: Savognino).

Through the Julier Pass the area was used early on as a north-south alpine crossing. So several Bronze Age finds could be made, which allow the conclusion that already between 1800 BC. and 1000 BC must have found a settlement. One even suspects that there was perhaps a Stone Age settlement, or at least a resting place, in the Rudnal.

The Julier Pass was used by the Romans as a transit axis and was expanded accordingly.

In the 13th century Savognin came into the possession of the Chur bishop. Under this it became the main town and parish of the Oberhalbstein court, and was subsequently included in the church association. The valley bought itself off in 1552 and gained full sovereignty within the Free State of the Three Leagues, from which the Canton of Graubünden emerged.

Pass traffic has formed the economic basis alongside livestock farming since the Middle Ages, but this decreased rapidly after the opening of the Gotthard Railway. Since for a long time there was only work in the valley, the economic situation deteriorated. It was only after 1960 that the ascent to a tourist destination began, which has permanently changed the appearance of the town.

According to the original three districts, there are three Catholic baroque churches in Savognin:

  • The 1 catholic parish church of the Virgin Mary Reception (Nossadonna) was built between 1632 and 1641. On the outside it still appears as a Gothic building, but inside it is a baroque hall church with two transepts - like side chapels in front of the choir wall. The polygon choir has moved in across from the hall. While there are wall paintings with scenes from the Old Testament in the choir, the wall paintings in the choir are scenes of the life of the Virgin Mary. The high altar dates from 1750.
  • The 2 St. Michael Catholic Church (Son Mitgel) was rebuilt in 1663. Inside there are stucco work well worth seeing from 1693.
  • The 3 Catholic Church of St. Martin (Son Martegn) was rebuilt in 1677 in place of a previous building. It has the ground plan of a Greek cross, in which the cross arms have been widened, the choir has been drawn in. The tower comes from the previous church and is in the Romanesque style and was integrated into the northern corner of the facade. Inside there is a monumental ceiling painting by Carlo Nuvolone from 1681, for example a representation of paradise in the dome, which is framed by the gates of Jerusalem. Next to the left side altar is the miraculous image of Mary and above the right side altar is the crucifixion of Jesus.
