Cities
1 Magdeburg – Capital of the Land, on the banks of the Elbe
2 Hall – With the city of Leipzig, Halle today forms a large metropolitan area with almost 2 million inhabitants. The city has a large university and around 18,000 students.
3 Stendal – Town on the banks of the Elbe in the heart of the Altmark district, one of the oldest agricultural areas in Germany. It was once a city of the Hanseatic League
4 Tangermünde – Very touristic town, renowned for its deeply medieval character
5 Dessau-Rosslau (Dessau-Roßlau) – Located at the confluence of the Mulde and Elbe rivers, the town of Dessau was founded in the 12the century and developed rapidly. In 1474 it became the residence of a collateral line of the princes of Anhalt. The city has a large number of buildings erected by the Bauhaus which, since 1996, have been classified as a World Cultural Heritage by Unesco . Wasserburg in Roßlau.
6 Wittenberg (Lutherstadt Wittenberg) – The city is famous for its links with Martin Luther and the origins of the Protestant Reformation: many of its buildings are associated with the events of this time.
7 Eisleben (Lutherstadt Eisleben) – The city is best known as the birthplace and death of Martin Luther. The memory of the Reformer is evoked in his birthplace and in the house which saw him pass away.
8 Naumburg (Naumburg an der Saale) – The city is famous for its Saints-Pierre-et-Paul cathedral, famous in particular for its statuary, including the famous Ute de Naumbourg, and for its rood screen. You can admire the market square and visit the former home of Nietzsche.
9 Freyburg – Small town with a medieval atmosphere, watered by the Unstrut river and surrounded by vineyards.
10 Wernigerode – The town lies on the banks of the Holtemme River, on the northern slope of the Harz Mountains. A railway, the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen leads from Wernigerode to Brocken, highest point of the Harz massif
11 Quedlinburg – Very touristy and very busy city, nestled at the foot of an imposing rocky peak on which stands its castle and its abbey church, with winding streets lined with half-timbered houses of all styles and eras. The old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 .
12 Thale – Town around 8 km West of Quedlinburg on the Bode river which forms green gorges nearby. Its station is the terminus of the railway Magdeburg-Thale
