Scania is a region of the Sweden.

To know

La Scania (in Swedish: Skane) is one of the traditional provinces of the Sweden whose borders coincide with those of the current county of Scania (Skåne län). Scania, the southernmost county in the Sweden, bordered to the north by the counties of Halland, Kronoberg is Blekinge, to the east, west and south with the Baltic Sea and the Öresund / Øresund Strait.

Background

Historically the province of Scania is part of the Skåneland which, together with the Jutland and to "the islands" formed the Denmark. In 1658, following the treaty of Roskilde, Terra Scania became the possession of Sweden, but keeping its old laws and diet. However the island of Bornholm revolted and returned to Denmark while the other provinces were incorporated into Sweden.

Although today the county seat is Malmö at the time of the province the capital was Lund.

Spoken languages

The official language is Swedish, but most of the inhabitants know and speak a dialect which in its oldest form constitutes the eastern branch of the Danish language. Today the ancient form is spoken by no more than 10% of the population, mainly in rural areas. The Bornholm Island dialect has the same origins. Modern Scanese is said to be Swedish in the Danish mouth. For more information see the works of Johannes Broendum Nielsen.

Culture and traditions

Malmö is, together with Lund, the cultural center of Scania and one of the most important in the Sweden; The imposing cathedrals and museums are well known, Baroque and Gothic art is certainly the one that most influences the shapes and structures of ancient buildings.
