Ystad (say: Üsta) is a port city in the south Sweden in Gentle. The city became particularly famous with its many older two-story houses and small streets, primarily through Henning Mankells Wallander crime novels.

Ystad also has an excellent selection of beaches, all of which are a bit out of the way but are easy to get to by bike and car. Ystad is also the starting point for trips to the Danish island Bornholmwhere you can be in either 2.5 hours or 1.5 hours, depending on the ferry. Of Malmo you just follow the E65 to Ystad. Coming from the north you can either take the federal road 19 here. It also ends in Ystad.

By boat

Marienkirche

The cityscape is practically authentically preserved from the 19th century because Ystad was one of the first cities to have a volunteer fire brigade. Even today, a tower guard blows every quarter of an hour from 9:15 p.m. on the Marienkirche a horn that sounds like a foghorn. It's an old tradition. The tower guard alerted people when there was a fire and as proof that he was awake he had to blow the horn again and again. During the week, Ystad is almost deserted, only in the restaurants frequented by tourists around the Stortorget and in the Stora Östergatan there is still some activity. Because of its small size, Ystad is very safe, especially in the old town. The harbor is not much more unsafe either.

The Police station is on Kristianstadsvagen 51 at the exit of the city towards Tomelilla. This building was used for the first Wallander films Rolf Lassgård which are based on the books written by Mankell. When the film series was continued and new Krister Henriksson when Kurt Wallander appeared, it was and still is a building on top of it Regimented near the Ystad Studios used as a police station.
