Rønne - Rønne

Rønne

Rønne is the largest city on the Danish island in the Baltic Sea Bornholm and as the administrative seat at the same time the (unofficial) capital of the island.

background

Typical street scene

Rønne is the largest city on Bornholm, the seat of the administrative center of the island and the largest trading center. Almost a third of all Bornholm residents live in the capital, so it is not surprising that most of the life can be found here, at least on working days during business hours. Almost all specialty shops can only be found in Rønne, and if you ask about less common items in smaller shops in other places on your trip across the island, you will often be told that you have to go to Rønne for them.

As a traveler, in the vast majority of cases you cannot avoid visiting Rønne, because almost every visitor to Bornholm enters the island in Rønne - either at the airport in the south-east of the city or in the much more common case at the only large ferry port on the island: displays on the Access roads to the port show around the clock which ferry port the next ferry will leave for, the Bornholm Velkomstcenter is right by the port, and the city center is only a few minutes' walk if you have arrived by ferry - Rønne's port is that Navel, through which the island is connected to the mainland - to the Danish, Swedish and German mainland.

While in some places on the island, especially in many coastal towns, one quickly gets the impression that all economic life revolves around tourism and that typical Bornholm life can hardly be observed, despite the many tourists in the summer, the capital is but clearly shaped by the residents themselves and their everyday life.

Rønne offers little spectacular, but many small sights and deserves more attention from travelers than just driving through to the holiday home somewhere on the dune or rocky coast of the island.

shop

Store Torvegade pedestrian zone

Rønne is practically the island's shopping center: what you can't get here in town, you usually don't get anywhere on Bornholm. Rønne has the largest supermarkets (but there are enough of them spread across the island), the largest pedestrian zone with a good range of goods, and most of the specialty shops. If you are traveling by car on Bornholm, it is no problem for you to go shopping in Rønne from the more distant villages. For everyone who depends on public transport (or their own bike), shopping for special needs requires a little more planning.

The Nordea and Danske Bank ATMs are right next to each other at Store Torv. As usual in Denmark, you can select a German manual in the menu control.

trips

Hammershus

If you are on Bornholm by car, you can easily reach every point of Bornholm from Rønne for a day trip, e.g.

  • Hammershus. The fortress in the far north.
  • Aarsdale. Fishing villages on the east coast.
  • Almindingen. The wooded area in the middle of the island.
  • Aakirkeby. The only town on the island without a harbor, with the Aakirke and the NaturBornholm museum.

However, the following excursion destinations are available in the immediate vicinity of the city:

Ny Kirke - Bornholm's smallest round church
  • Hasle. About 8 km north of the coast, with the museum smokehouse, the new bathing facilities with an original diving platform in the harbor basin and Grønbechs Gard, the center of artists and artisans in an old courtyard in the middle of town.
  • Nyker. About 5 km northwest towards Klemensker, with the Nye Kirke, the smallest of Bornholm's four round churches, and the workshop of the textile printer Bente Hammer. In addition, the Bornholms Rovfugleshow is east of Nyker. Cyclists reach the place on Route 23, which in this section leads quietly along an old railway embankment.
  • Nylars. About 8 km southeast, also with a round church that is well worth seeing. Here, too, there is a beautiful bike path on the old embankment (Route 21).
