background

Road from the port towards Sandvig

Allinge is a town on the north-western tip of Bornholm, and is shared with its northern neighbor Sandvig also known as Allinge-Sandvig. Like the entire north-western region, the small port city is characterized by numerous hotels and holiday complexes. Nevertheless, it has kept a nice little town center around the harbor, with a number of beautiful streets and small houses in the Bornholm half-timbered houses.

By bicycle

The Bornholm Round, the cycle route around Bornholm, also goes through Allinge. The route description and GPS track for the cycle route signposted with the number 10 can be found in the Bike tour wiki.

On foot

On the Kyststi, the coastal footpath around Bornholm, you come through Allinge. This hiking trail is the old sea rescue route, on which the rescuers rushed to the aid of a ship in distress, in which they only approached the hair spot as far as possible by land. Only then did they launch the small boats, which often enough remained very dangerous.

mobility

Map of Allinge

Parking spaces can be found at the harbor and around the church, among other places. Because of the narrow streets and one-way street regulations, it makes sense to look for a parking space as soon as possible and then explore the place on foot, which should be possible at least around the port without any problems. However, users of wheelchairs and rollators may have to take detours in some places or they may be restricted in general.

Tourist Attractions

Allinge Kirke
Church from the west
  • 1 Most of the hustle and bustle in Allinge is around the port, which is lined with small houses with shops at the upper edge of the harbor, and at the southern end of which there are fish shops. Originally a natural harbor, today's harbor basin was only later blown into the rocky coast. The port and with it the place had to withstand two major storm surges, 1872 and 1904.
  • 2 The yellow one is central and cannot be overlooked church in the middle of the place. Erected as a chapel around 1500, it has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the years. It got its present form in 1896 when a choir and a transept were added to the late Gothic nave. The pulpit from the middle of the 17th century, richly decorated with carvings, is worth seeing. Objects from Hammershus can be found in and around the church, such as the altarpiece, the chandelier and tombstones of the commanders of the fortress.
Library
  • 3 A beautiful building in Allinge, albeit a little away from the town center, is certainly the public one Librarywhose beautifully restored brick building is crowned with a small tiled tower.
Rock carvings by Madsebakke
  • 4 Madsebakke: Above Allinge and Sandvig, there is a collection of rock carvings or rock carvings (helleristninger), which is considered to be the largest collection of such rock carvings from the Bronze Age in Denmark. The wheels, ships, foot outlines etc. have been traced in red so that they are easily recognizable. The rock slabs are freely accessible.

trips

Hammershus ruin
  • Sandvig. The direct neighbor of Allinge, with the Hammerknuden.
  • Hammershus. Fortress and the Hammerhavn with the adjacent lakes Hammersø, Kristallsø and Opalsø at the foot of Hammerknuden.
  • Ertholmene. Day trip to the island of Ertholmene.

On the drive to Gudhjem If you pass one attraction after the other on road 158, so that the short drive can turn into a half-day tour, you want to stop at all points:

Sights between Allinge and Gudhjem
Stammershalle
  • Tejn
  • Stammershalle
  • Døndalen. About 2 km after Stammershalle, a path leads to the right of the road (parking lot) through Døndalen, the Thunder Valley to Bornholm's largest waterfall. The waterfall is only really impressive in winter or after a lot of rain in summer, but the short walk is still worth it. Climbing rocks at the waterfall and a challenging climb from the Amtsmandstenen, the deepest point of the gorge up to a lookout point, make the valley very attractive for children too.
  • Bornholms Art Museum. The imposing building of the museum, reopened in 2003 after an expansion, shows mainly Bornholm painters in a permanent exhibition, alongside changing exhibitions. There is also a small kiosk with a terrace, so that the museum can also be used as a resting place for hikers on the coastal footpath that runs directly below the museum. Coming from Allinge, the museum is about 5 km before Gudhjem directly on the road.
  • Helligdomsklipperne. Below the art museum are the cliffs of Helligdomen. You can reach them either on the former sea rescue route, today's coastal hiking trail, or on a footpath from the art museum. You can continue to Gudhjem by boat from the cliffs. The small boats leave Gudhjem and the cliffs below the Bornhom Museum several times a day during the summer season. Attention, the whole thing is a rocky affair and getting in and out, especially at the Libertsklippen, is only recommended for relatively stable people. The boat driver also gives no guarantee that you will get on or off the boat, i.e. if the sea is too rough you will sometimes be left standing on the cliffs.
