Svaneke is a small town on Bornholm.

background

Torv - the market place

The small port town of Svaneke on the north-east coast of Bornholm is one of the smallest merchant towns in Denmark and is accordingly characterized by large merchants' courtyards and many half-timbered houses in the old town around the port. The harbor is one of the attractions of the medieval city, which has been preserved in excellent condition, the market and the old merchants' courtyards are further special attractions of the small town with Bornholm's only brewery.

Since the middle of the last century, the city administration has issued strict rules regarding the preservation of the houses in the town center. Since then, no more demolitions and new buildings have been made, but the existing structure has been preserved. The Union Svanekes Venner (Friends of Svanekes) is committed today with a foundation for the largely authentic preservation or restoration of houses and the smallest details such as street signs, all changes are subject to very restrictive requirements. This has paid off in several ways, for example Svaneke was awarded the gold medal of the European Council for this in 1975, and in 2014 the city became the most beautiful small town in Denmark chosen.
