  • Weert - Robrecht van Castel had two dikes built upstream and downstream around 1330, and the old bed was closed off from the new one.

Subsequently, the Spaniard Pedro Coloma had the Sas van Weert built on the Oude Scheldt between 1589 and 1592 so that ships could still sail to the center of Bornem. The Sas van Weert, now out of use, is the oldest hydraulic engineering monument in Flanders. The Old Scheldt is completely closed off from the Nieuwe. At low tide, excess water can flow to the Scheldt via the Weertse kil, built around 1980-1982, but it is not possible for polluted Scheldt water to contaminate the Old Scheldt.

  • Mariekerke - Known for its eel festival. It used to be one of the main fishing villages along the Scheldt. They mainly fished for mayfish (Fien). The Church of Our Lady was destroyed in 1914 and rebuilt in 1925. The poet Jan Hammenecker was also born in this village in 1878. He found his inspiration in the Scheldt and the water.
  • Saint Amands - The French-speaking poet Emile Verhaeren is buried on the banks of the Scheldt. He was born in this village in 1855. On the dike is a metal statue called The Ferryman by Marc Macken.
  • pure -
  • Hingene - Sub-municipality of Bornem. Can be reached via the N16 Temse - Willebroek. Hingene itself consists of Centrum, Eikevliet and Wintam. The last dike breach dates from February 1, 1953. 1200 hectares of land and 200 houses were flooded. It is a beautiful walking area. Hingene also has a good school, the Huveneers primary school!
