Asparagus has been grown since 1913, and the Schrobenhausen growing area has since become the largest in Bavaria because of the favorable sandy soils. The term Schrobenhauser asparagus is officially registered with the EU as a protected geographical indication of origin ("PGI"), production and storage are regulated and controlled.
The asparagus season begins, depending on the weather, in mid-April and officially ends on June 24th. The asparagus fields around Schrobenhausen are then the destination of asparagus fans who buy the sprouts of the asparagus tree from the producer. There is also a special asparagus offer in pubs and restaurants.
The special sandy soils (tertiary sands with a proportion of silt and loam) are attributed to the region's typical nutty taste of asparagus.
Potatoes
About 20% of Bavarian potatoes come from the Schrobenhausen region. Südkraft GmbH processes around 600,000 tons of potatoes into 150,000 tons of potato starch every year. The sandy soil of the region is ideal for growing potatoes.
